Seems fairly obvious to me...I think. McLaren are in global terms especially when it's not the specialist motoring beards like the great and the good of PH a tiny brand compared to Ferrari. Going head to head with Ferrari just wouldn't work for McLaren so I am sure as soon as they realised the F-150 or whatever it's going to be called was going to be launched at the same time they had to take a different approach. Or maybe McLaren's PR agency takes a different view to Ferrari's in terms of maximising exposure...it's fairly commonplace now for leaked images, prototype drives etc before the car gets revelaed it obviously gets more column inches....look at the BMW i8....how long have BMW been marketing that including all those shots of the "concept" two years ?

Still what will be really interesting is IF journalists or magazines will ever be able to test these cars back to back ? I suspect Ferrari with their famed control over these things might be a little shy. Might take a friendly owner or two to co-operate....now that will be a genuine scoop!

Mclaren have a heritage, there is no doubt about that. Admittedly, it's not as long as the Fix It Again Tony boys.

One thing I feel we can ALL agree on though...

The stats for the P1 will be on the money, real world numbers, speeds, etc. These speeds will be achievable my owners and Chris Harris alike. The stats for the F150 will be manufactured and no one, bar the factory, will ever be able to extract the same data from the car.

Mclaren P1 for me, every time. The cheating, lying, pasta-sucking FIA 'owners' can go do one.

Different companies; different histories. One with a massive heritage and reputation for producing fabulous performance cars. The other new onto the scene and without the heritage.
Crikey, is it 28 May 1992 already?

Going off every recent Ferrari looking hideous I wouldn't agree with that.

Obviously McLaren has heritage - I perhaps overstated. But imagine if McLaren had taken the 'no news, no releases' strategy that Ferrari has; do you think there would be the same interest?
How much is an F1 again in today's market? And an F40, F50, Enzo (only the fact that I need to mention different ones will tell you something).

The biggest 'problem' I see for the P1 is that it's got awfully large boots to fill - probably the largest in automotive history.

Of course there would. Even without it, all pre-launch marketing and speculation is forgotten once the car is released.

They'll both be superbly well made cars which will each be admired by a mixture of die-hard fanboys and broader minded petrolheads.

Comparing apples with oranges.

They made 1300 F40s. The fact they can achieve 400k given their commonality is amazing.

The limited-run, very rare Ferraris go for an awful lot. Let's not forget it took a long time for the market to appreciate the F1. In the here and now are there 300 people prepare to stump up close to a million for one? I hope so but the market is tough.

I think the P1 looks stunning from every angle bar 1, dead on side profile. It's looks so bland, like a 5 year old being asked to draw a supercar, that's what the shape would be.

I have to say the Zonda vs Veyron hyper car battle didn't really excite me along with some others but I have to say I am really looking forward to these 2 going toe to toe and even though I hate the inaccuracies you usually get on Topgear, I'm looking forward to these being let loose by the Stig.

Hopefully the insurance company signs off Pistonheads to compare these in anger.

Hope the Maclaren comes on top. Will most likely be the same story though with the MP4-12C and 458. Maclaren is faster but has less drama.

oooooh i'm 5 again.

Be interesting to see what they market the F-150 as in the US, as I think Ford own the rights to that model name in that domain.... Both stunning cars.

I'm with you there...

Why not just build a mini F1 track car and be done with it.

Anything with over 800 bhp is just stupid on the road.

McLaren used to build customer F1 and CanAm cars - why not just do that again.

F-150 is winning my Euromillions vote largely because they've stuck to a normally aspirated V12.

The choice between the two is subjective, if either fits your dream car criteria and you have the cash, you'll buy it whether its an nth of a second faster or slower or whatever the top speed is. I just can't wait to watch Chris Harris abusing either one (or hopefully both).

Looking at the P1 mule running around Woking on YT, the styling looks cohesive and surprisingly compact - handy for driving everyday if you want to expose your £866,000 toy to the real world.

Playing devils advocate here.

Your suggesting that the P1 shouldnt be the best it can around the track and that the owners can get to the limits of the car....So your suggesting a 1.6l Focus then?

Christ the world would be dull if there where not mad motors like these about. Thank god there are some people out there able to afford them so us mere mortals get to drool and dream.
You seem to be under the impression that ridiculous is a bad thing?

Wheel Ron back in, twitching like Captain Darling, a tensed-up ball of nervous pernickity fury to tell us

"It's the best sports car in the world, and we've got the numbers to prove it".

and watch all the knickers on the Alfa stand disintegrate.

Err, nope. Its all a gigantic, point-missing dweeb-fest.

If all accounts are true (in that all the new Ferrari's are already accounted for and the allocation is sold out) then I really don't see why they need to capture the rest of the world with leaked images and the like.

With this in mind, then it makes sense to just reveal at Geneva and show the rest of us mere mortals could have bought had we had a big enough bank balance and also were prepared to kiss Ferrari's a4se in the run up to even be allowed the chance to purchase in the first place.
