Brilliant cars! What was Ford offering at the time, the Sapphire 2.0 twin cam? The Cavaliers engine was well ahead of the game, no other multivalve engine came close (in family saloons anyway)
Exactly, the Vauxhall option back than always had the better/faster motor.Sierra/Mondeo vs Cavalier.
Had a few Cavs, all were decent old cars back in the day...lift off oversteer was always fun.

The GSi pumped out 150bhp in N/A mode didnt it? That seemed alot back in 1990...
Ummm white ones looked bloomin' ace!!
I had a 4x4 Cav GSI the same as in the clip. 150bhp was a pathetic amount of power in a car of that weight. Zero,...absolutely zero performance. I sold it after four months and got a Carlton GSI 3000 24v, which was much better.Ummm white ones looked bloomin' ace!!

Yeah 150 bhp and a bloody healthy torque curve. This and the fuel economy is what i love about these engines. Ummm white ones looked bloomin' ace!!

Yep didnt Vauxhall copy the red top (well the cosworth head) and start penny pinching to create the Ecotek? Nylon cambelt pullies!!!
Not sure if it was the CosCast head, probably seen as it was the stronger one.But the ball's it up somewhere along the way because I don't think I've ever come across an EcoTec that isn't on a path of self destruction. Or uses more oil than petrol. Or decides it's water pump would be better in pieces.
All while producing less power and returning worse fuel economy than the older engine.
Progress and all that.

???Sierra/Mondeo vs Cavalier.
You could get a Sapphire Cosworth until 1992, 2wd 204bhp and 4wd 220bhp and both faster than the GSi2000.
Although my Dad had a new GSi2000 and I loved going out in it, loved the touring cars looks.

Think your wrong about that cars in them days did not weigh anything like they do nowi would have thought the GSI weighed less than a new focus and did not have all the cats on they do now,i had a lot of diffrent cars at that time, Ie Xr3i,opel manta GTE, MR2 Mk1.and the cavalier 16v was brisk

6 Speed Box too don'tcha know?
0 - 60 in 6.4 Seconds Which is about half a second slower than a Saph, but it'll also reach 149mph.
They don't blow themselves up anywhere near as often and are a lot easier to get power from.
A 2.0 4x4 Sierra is more comparable to a GSi 2000 4x4.
That makes the Sierra look awfully slow.
You don't have to re-mortgage your house to buy a Cav Turbo these days either.

The cavaliers WERE good cars,i had a 2 SRI"s does anyone know 0-60 times of the SRI and the GSI ?
Not sure if it was same 4x4 sytem as calibra did GSI have a turbo like the Calibra? The sri has 115 and 130 BHP
The 4wd System is the same as on the Cavalier and Calibra TurboNot sure if it was same 4x4 sytem as calibra did GSI have a turbo like the Calibra? The sri has 115 and 130 BHP
The Cav GSI TX box is the same as the non turbo C20XE engined Calibra 4x4
The turbo'd Calibra's have a box similar to look at but was slightly larger with stronger internals.

The 2wd was lively, maybe the 4wd killed it a bit? Never driven a 4wd..
Yup. I had a 2wd and a 4x4. The 4x4 was much slower, Mine was bought by a guy from Total Vauxhall (Dougie) its now a cavalier GSI3000 4x4
Ah i remember our Mortgage advisor never letting me have a go in his shiney Gsi when i worked for Harvey and Donaldson in Glasgow back in the early nineties.
There was speculation over the red top heads being better if they had coscast on the end , but there was no difference , however i never heard of a Cosworth head going porous unlike mine did.

That ad brings back memories...
As a teenager I had a similar period 2.0 SRi cavalier that I promptly modified to replicate the far tastier GSi. A change of front grill, a tweak of the badge, an uprated fuel pressure regulator, an exhaust upgrade and I was pretty pleased with myself. Handled like a pig. They were the days...
