Equipment and tech is way above that of the Fiesta so comparing the cars £ for £ isn't really a good idea. The Fiesta is still great value for money mind you, don't get me wrong! Also, the Clio comes with 4+, so 4 years of warranty, breakdown cover and servicing included within the price.

Some option prices:

Cup chassis and 18" wheels £450
18" wheels £185
Monitor £95
Climate control £410 (standard on Lux)
Extra tint £250 (Standard on Lux)
Leather £1000
Heated seats £250
Rear sensors £315
Rear camera £350
Metallic £495
Flame red £595
Liquid yellow £1300
Nice to see some sensibly priced options for a change

•Cup chassis option with 3mm lowered ride height, 15% stiffer chassis (springs and dampers) and improved steering, red brake calipers and 18" wheels gloss black with Dunlop Sport Maxx TT tyres
Not bad, hopefully they will go the whole way and offer a slightly "stripped" version.

And that gearbox seems to have fairly quick shift times.

Or is it that its just boring to have the same thing said every time there is a thread about new cars...

Given how few people actually buy new cars these days, would it not make more sense for manufacturers to release details of leasing deals ahead than outright purchase prices?

I'd be interesting to know what proportion of new cars are actually owned by their first registered keeper. I bet it's less than 20%, possibly a lot less.

The new 200 bhp 208 Gti is also £19K and has lots of nice standard kit this Clio RS doesn't.

I suppose if you really need an Auto box and 5 doors and can live with those very dubious looks then OK, but I'm not so sure the expected bit of extra handling over the rivals is worth it anymore. Renaultsport has seriously lost its core values.

Fair points although the Fiesta appears to be 116kgs lighter than the Clio, plus has an overboost.

I guess 5-dr, bigger brakes and a (presumably) heavier tranny all add kgs.

Really good of Renault to keep it as £19k and you even get a sat nav.
Not sure where you've managed to pluck 116kg from, the Fiesta is quoted as weighing 1163kg and the Clio is 1204kg.

Pretty aggressive pricing from Renault I think, although a shame they didn't do a Ford and say it costs £12.95 base price but comes with naff all

To my eyes that is very ugly car. Shame on the 5 door only as well becuase I always associate a hot hatch as being 3 door. But I guess the new Focus ST is the same.

Fiesta at 1163kg is EC with 75kgs driver. Clio at 1204kg is DIN without 75kgs driver. So 1279kgs - 1163kgs = 116kgs.

I am quite sure this is correct but not 100% as there's nothing official yet so it will be interesting when weights are confirmed.

Does make me laugh when people are accused of being 'mugs' for spending 'silly' money on new cars. If these morons didn't exist, where would the bargain second hand cars come from? wink

I'm very glad such people exist in the huge numbers that they do or we wouldn't have all this wonderful depreciation, but that doesn't mean I understand them. smile

That's not bad!

The low angle front shot with the car in yellow makes the bonnet look HUGE!!

I'd like to see it in the flesh.

I can perfectly well afford one (cash, not credit) but struggle to justify spending this sort of money on a car that does less than 10 miles a day to the train station and back.
Well you have just proven my point then. If you earned more money you would be able to justify spending it on a car wouldn't you....regardless of your current income or transportation needs.
I disagree. I've earned more money every year, yet I still cannot justify spending money on something that does 5 miles in a morning and 5 miles in an evening.

Even if I could afford to buy a Zonda for the station car park, I still could not justify replacing the existing car.

Climate, Auto lights/wipers, reversing sensors, heated and folding mirrors. Essential? Maybe not but all that is extra on the Clio. Renault want an £1000 for all that on a 'Lux pack'. OK you can trade value on extras and the standard kit all day but you even have to pay £450 extra for the Cup pack on the Clio. The Cup used to be the cheaper basic spec option.

Some might say 3 doors and a manual box on the 208 Gti is a better base spec anyway.

Seems like Renault want to make you pay for that Auto box whether you like it or not.

fk me i feel old (i'm 34).

£19k for a clio.
£15,000 in 2002 when the 172 was at its height is £19,500 today.

Yes you are getting old.
I'm 38 and have just had exactly the same thought, eek 20k for a hot hatch!!!!

I'd sooner spend 5k on a Clio 197 and 15k on a 968 Clubsport or something of similar excitement.

Well hang on a moment why have you got any cars then, and why have you not replaced your cars with the cheapest car you can find?

OH wait a minute......is it because you don't want to drive just any old car...you want to drive a TVR (horrendous fuel economy)...an ST220 (horrendous fuel economy) AND and a fit of pure capitalism....another car! So just to confirm that's 3 cars in your household to cover your 10 mile daily commute....which just to clarify...YOU CAN JUSTIFY??

Medal for utterly nonsensical retort of the day is in the post

ETA.....you are compounding my point by the way...if you could afford a Zonda, then i am absolutely sure you would be able to justify £20k on a new car as a daily driver.

You're getting confused between the Clio 197/200 Cup (cheaper, very basic model), and the Clio 197/200 'Lux' with a cup chassis added (often referred to as Full Fat) as an optional extra.

Horses for courses with the options really, the cars are too different to only compare the creature comforts fitted as standard and as you say, you get them all (and more) as soon as you go for the Lux spec.

Its nice to see from the photos on the Renaultsport website that they're keeping a "normal" hand brake rather than one of those new electronic ones.

The early French language reviews are... dissapoiting :-( Yes, it's softer and less fun. The engine is flat and the flappy paddle a little slow. So Renault have shot themselves in the foot. People who want a comfy pseudo-sports hatch won't get one anyway and the hardcore people will now avoid it. What a bummer.
