Well I guess what I deem to be a sleeper/relatively quick car differs from yours.
The very fact that you define sleeper as sleeper/relatively quick car means you just don't 'get it'.

My mother would say a Mercedes is fast. ANY Mercedes, especially a big E class. An full fat AMG E-Class is a very quick car but would NEVER be a sleeper. Even if it had in excess of 1,000hp.

Chip your car, enjoy the speed but nobody will ever be surprised when you leave them at the traffic lights as it's a big Mercedes.

What about the American take on the sleeper. Probably just the noise that would give it away!

A sleeper (US English) or Q-car (British English) is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior.[1][2][3] Sleeper cars are so called because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car. In some cases the car appears worse due to seeming neglect on the owner's part, typically referred to as "all go and no show". While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to perform at higher performance levels. The American nomenclature comes from the term sleeper agent, while the British term derives from the Q-ships used by the Royal Navy.

This is my daily, original patina 1951 International Harvester.

But underneath it's really a 2005 Dodge 5.7 hemi AWD
With 350hp it's no slouch, but it's not going to snap your head off.

I intentionally built it keeping the original grandpas farm truck exterior, but wanted a reliable daily with creature comforts.
It was also built on a budget, so I can use and abuse it.

It certainly surprises a few unsuspecting folk when I blast past them on the interstate.

yeah ok i can see the funny side to this but whilst it might be quick its not very nice is it. in fact its a bag of nails. im all for a sleeper but if i owned one id want it to at least look ok and be comfortable inside. this renorts on its last legs in those departments.

I know it's a slightly modified exterior which does stop some of the sleeper image, but most of the time they are all noise and show with no go, this c2 is pushing out 433bhp though!

Just as well it's not yours and equally just as well that it's not my daily driver, or even my usual weekend car then, eh?

That's a fine looking thing. I don't particularly appreciate trucks, or patina, but I like that.

Hmm, not so sure, when did you last see a Renault 19 in the wild ? mid 2000s ? for me, alarm bells would be ringing as there must be only a hundred or so of them left but for most it just looks like an aging, nondescript, shabby French hatchback of no particular interest.

Cool as hell though.

Would a debadged, remapped 135i on steelies count ?
"for most it just looks like an aging, nondescript, shabby French hatchback of no particular interest."

That's exactly why it works. Either you won't notice it, or you'll think it's a battered Renault 19 that gets bodged through another MOT every year but really shouldn't be on the road.

It's perfect. One of the best examples I've ever seen.
Yeah, I can see that but petrolheads would probably wonder how its still about, perhaps put it in a later one, like a Megane, er, that wont work biggrin

I do get it chap, some of the cars in this thread are fascinating and the ultimate sleepers. Cars people would think barely run let alone hit 60 ridiculously quickly.

Appreciate the constructive posts by the way. smile

for me a sleeper is something that looks like a POS on the outside but has a ludicrously absurd engine on the insde. These standard looking Mercs with AMG lumps are not sleepers. A Q car is not a sleeper, its a Q car.
