I've got an AMG E43 on order. It has occurred to me that if I remove the badges it will look petty much like a AMG line E220d. Even the twin exhausts (a bit bigger and real compared to the E220d) on the E220d look very similar. You really would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
As discussed.

No badges. Unassuming estate car.
Honking great V8.

@MrE E500?

There are currently two petrols estates available in the Eclass range a E43 or E63. A E500 would be a great alternative.

E500.
Less shouty than an E63. Somewhat easier to look after as well.
All the performance a family car really needs, silent waft the rest of the time.

If I was buying a new one, an E43 would be very similar. What I'd really want is the E63 drivetrain in a more standard looking car.

Quad exhausts give it away too easily though for ultimate Q-car appeal. E34s were a lot better in this respect

A Galant or a M5 is not a sleeper!

Surprisingly, at least twice my Jag has been called a sleeper and a wolf in sheeps clothing! I fail to see how it could look faster, unless I flared the arches...

TBH, I don't entirely get sleepers, how often can pull up at traffic lights get the chance smoke another fast car? Maybe on track days or Santa Pod perhaps.

Either paint it red or put some stripes on, that's the only way that thing will look faster!

I can't find a photo, but my old early 90s Saab 900 Turbo (Saloon...) looked very much like an old gentleman's runabout.

But with around 200bhp and a straight through stainless steel exhaust, it was hilarious.

My CLS 500, 388 bhp but looks like every 230 bhp CLS 320CDI apart from the badge on the back, and most CLS 500s are "only" 306 bhp anyway, 0-60 in between 4.7 and 5.2 depending on what you read, 100 in 11 something, on par with a Golf R/135i.

the rule is any big german car can never be a sleeper because most people know they are fast, doesn't matter if there is a lower engine in the model range.

Surprised a BMW I8 with it biggrin

All get out of my mighty way and no faster but see your point, but would be the same for the Jags mentioned.

I think the Astra H SRI turbo 200 gets a look in here. The 5 door had 30 bhp more than the 3 door 170 turbo making it even more unsuspecting. Pretty much even with a Mk 5 GTI in terms of performance but in silver is as anonymous as you like and looks like a 1.6 .

A couple of additions like a filter and exhaust and is almost has the power of a much more lairy looking VXR.

+ This.

I also find 0-60 4.7sec quite optimistic, considering a XJR which is lighter does 60 in about 5sec and 100mph in 12sec, with 400bhp.

It does have a bodykit (as standard) that wasn't available on the 1.6.

It was an option on all SRi Astras and standard on the Turbo 200. You could think it was a 1.8 with the optional bodykit and wheels

Vectra gsi isn't really fast even 10 years ago 220 bhp wasn't much.

Now the turbo v6 vectra is a bit of a sleeper.

For me the Toyota blade master g.

Toyota corolla with a 3.5 v6 engine, can't get anymore sleeper than this, from the factory.
I've never heard of that car but man I want one now!

Fair point once it has passed you (gives it away as does the M5 badge on the back), but when it is approaching you from behind on the motorway, how many people would really know the difference between the M5 above and the 520i below (credit: linked from PH)? The bumper is different, as are the wing mirrors, but otherwise they look pretty similar... has to be one of the more 'sleeper' performance cars out there... I find that most people who are not petrol heads have no idea what it is or whether it is powerful or not...

An M5 is NOT a q car/sleeper/whatever you want to call it. It absolutely is not
