How about my Legnum;

300bhp, 340lb/ft, 0-60 in 5 flat with AYC and 4wd. Couple this with an old mans tan leather and half wood steering wheel and it does make a good sleeper! I remember a shocked owner of an e46 M3 cab saying to me from his drivers seat "F54ck me! that moves dunnit!!"

And the best part is because of the 4WD and AYC the performance is available in almost any weather!
Yea, but the (factory) bodykit, black wheels, meaty exhaust and pretty aggressive looks mean it'll never be a sleeper for me.

I don't know much Jap stuff that could be seen as a sleeper, they do everyday performance a bit too well!

Sorry. Nice car tho (y)

The "meaty exhaust" has the stock tailpipe to maintain the stock looks and the wheels are stock too but with a crap satin black paint job! all stock as far as the exterior goes! to most folks this is just a 17 year old barge with a spongbob squarepants dangling in the rear window next to the "Fat Willies Surf Shack" sticker!!

It's also never as clean as that first pic;

What i think Googlebot is getting at is the fact your car has rear spoiler, VR4 badge and non standard looking wheels etc.

Sleepers, IMO, are cars that are de-badged or lesser badges, standard looking wheels were possible and no visible after market goodies. THAT is the sleeper concept.

Sorry, your car doesn't qualify! banghead

This is what my Audi used to look like back in the day. Completely standard from the outside, 15" steelies with wheel covers, scratched all over, 1.8 badge on the back. Slightly flared front arches was a little give away, but then few have seen it, thanks to 4.2 V8 under the bonnet, 267/267 Cat cams, reworked heads and cold air intake. Looks different now - form had to follow function.

In this thread are many sleepers. In this thread are many cars that are not sleepers. Many posters have pointed out what does, and doesn't qualify as a sleeper, with supporting pictures. Review these and see if you can see the difference. And then consider which of those categories your black wheeled, bespoilered fat-exhausted, club stickered jap 4WD turbo wagon fits.

My E39 M5 is missing the "M5" badge at the back. Someone stole it, I never got round to replacing it.
Does that count?

So a ford escort with a stripped interior, rollcage and r888's is a sleeper but a battered 17 year old estate car with dents, bad paint and 300bhp isnt? nothing on the exterior says turbo or 4wd either.

I really like Legnums, lovely cars but they are not fking sleepers.
If i was driving along and i saw this behind me i would expect a level of performance because it is a fairly lairy japanese car from the days when they started to re-define "everyday performance".
Whereas if i saw this i would think oh its a fking escort.

A legnum would be more q-car (faster than it looks) than sleeper (looks slow is very fast).

If you don't get it after looking at the thread then don't worry.

I wish I could find pics of Dad's two - the Ford P100 pickup (Cortina shape) with a 400bhp Rover V8 (not sure how they got that much power out of it - I was too young) and a Brodie Brittan Racing Mitsi Shogun; about 240bhp I think. Both had uprated wheels and suspension but apart from that, they looked almost stock.

He also tuned to nuts off a last of the line mk1 GTi from new. Don't know the power but it was a 911 eater.

Our 335d Touring is more of a semi Q car - SE so looks like any old 318/320d, but has a rather pokey unit under the bonnet. Only the exhausts give it away. It's shocked a few angry reps ;-)

This is fairly local to me. Big intercooler half hidden behind the bumper kind of gives it away a little but. Had a breif chat to the owner who said it blew off a MK2 Focus RS just a couple of days ago with ease in the wet. No idea of numbers though.

I don't really get the whole 'making crap cars stupidly fast', short of having way, way too much money to spend.

Because it the smile on your face when you leave a much better looking/faster car with the owners wonder WTF was that, because people don't expect a ratty/stty/standard looking car to blow their "high performance" OEM cars on track Ect, because it's huge fun need I go on?

personally I love a true sleeper especially the WTF was that moment

My MK 1 Mazda 3 MPS is a bit sleeperish.

The only give away is the bigger exhaust, bigger brakes and the sports seats. Apart from that it looks like any other mazda 3 except it has 260bhp smile

Never fails to leave a smile.

A mate of mine got annihilated in his brand new B7 RS4 by a Nova. It wasn't completely standard looking but not far off.

A few months later he supercharged his Audi. Then wrote it off...
