For that Merc to even think about becoming a sleeper it would need to be able to completely destroy an E63 not just drop its 0-60 from 8-7 secs which is still meh at best

Well my understanding of a sleeper was a car that looked relatively unassuming but had the ability to surprise people.

I'd personally consider something that looked like a taxi, still does 50mpg but can pull away from your average car to be a bit of a sleeper.

Apologies that it doesn't have 600bhp and will out drag a 911! Lighten up people.

LOL @ the Merc, that is not going to suprise anyone. A 90's hot hatch would walk away from it, who do you think will be surprised?

A sleeper is something thats a shed with enough power to worry a supercar, or at least worry an M3 or similar. The Micra is the perfect example, it'd surprise anyone.

that's because the E-class which is pretty much in the 'executive class' segment isnt unassuming when they look the same regardless of if they have some 1.8 litre diesel turbo or a 3litre+ petrol. This rules out many premium cars of today.

Well bearing in mind I own another much higher powered car and a couple of hot hatches, I've always been pleasantly surprised by it's pace!

I'm not saying it's the worlds fastest car but 370lbs of torque means it pulls extremely well. If re-mapped and running with 400lbs+ of torque, only 70lbs shy of my CLS63, I'd consider that fairly substantial.

But it's still slower then a Clio 172 from the start of the century, it is not in anyway a sleeper. A modern 320d BMW would be quicker.

My A8 has 440lb of torque, it still only does the 0-60 in 5.something...

I've owned two Clio 172s and I would confidently say that this would pull away in the mid-range unless the 172 was right up at 5k-rpm. Also being an auto, there's very little finesse to getting it off the line and getting between 1st/2nd gear.

Honestly I've driven some quick cars and this E has surprised me. It's not as if this is the quickest car I own yet I think re-mapped this would be a pleasant surprise.

I'm not claiming it's the fastest thing either.

enough power to worry a supercar? wrong.
it just needs more power then one would assume it to have. the above fiesta is a perfect example of a sleeper as one would assume it has the 1.1/1.3 petrol inside it, a normal, unmodified car.

Only???

Perhaps my views of what's quick is a little off but I'd consider a car able to hit 60 in sub 6 seconds to be fairly quick and sub 8 seconds fairly nippy.

Is there a definitive 0-60 time for a sleeper? haha smile

So you agree that a Clio 172 on cam vs a diesel E class would be quicker? So not a sleeper then lol

Moving onto the real world, mate of mine had a mk1 Clio with an Audi TT engine in it, running over 300bhp, it was rapid. Another mate has a mk2 Golf GTi with a similar setup. Another mate had a Renault Extra van with a R5 GTT engine in it. Another mate had a Megane Scenic with a 172 engine. IMO, these are all sleepers. Lot of my mates are into cars and had various "sleepers".

I'm going to throw my one out there at the risk of getting sleeper definition wrong but here goes...

Started Life as a boggo standard non turbo Mitsubishi GTO making a grand total of 170hp, with only a nice set of wheels to compliment the car. I slapped a set of WRX 13T turbo's to the standard NA engine and run it permanently on 20% in tank methanol.

Runs 11.84 @119mph 1/4 and 3.6 second 0-60 with all the creature comforts it left the factory with like granddad leather seats and AC etc.

yes, average joe and granddad prolly expect it to be 'fast' but most car people/enthusiast still relate it to a slow ass massively over weight GTO, which with 500hp and 560ftlbs its not wink
Yeah looking at that I wouldn't know it was fast being a japanese 2 door coupe with a set of rota wheels and a spoiler.

punches self in face.
