So you agree that a Clio 172 on cam vs a diesel E class would be quicker? So not a sleeper then lol

Moving onto the real world....
Well considering one is a 'hot' version of a car and one is essentially a diesel tank, I'd say if they were side by side in the mid-range that would be fairly respectable. Yet if the Clio was off the boil which most of the time they are unless you're driving it hard, the E would pull away from it.

I guess my view on what makes a relatively quick car compared to others on here differs. Also, I was referring to re-mapping it etc. but that appeared to be overlooked.

Ironic you say 'moving onto the real world' whilst arguing on the internet! wink

For that Merc to even think about becoming a sleeper it would need to have it's guts ripped out and have something far more powerful from a completely car installed

You appear to be the only one arguing.

The very fact you mentioned mpg means it is not a sleeper. Sleepers do not care about mpg. What you have there is a BARGE. There is a thread for people like you already.

Well I guess what I deem to be a sleeper/relatively quick car differs from yours. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine.

Shall I just keep re-posting this every time someone posts something up which is not a sleeper?

The Landie above is the epitome of a sleeper.

IMO, as well as the descriptions above, a sleeper would almost certainly not have the engine and running gear it came out of the factory with. The whole idea is, looks a like a shopping trolley/Dad Cab, but has completely unexpected performance. It looks "sleepy" but if you try your luck, you're going to lose.

A Golf GTI with 3 times the power is not a sleeper, it's modified hot hatch. Which is exactly why the Subaru above also fails. I used to have a Monaro, which is essentially an Omega Coupe with a big engine. But everyone knows it came out of the factory with a comedy V8 fitted, so it's not a sleeper. But if you take, say, an Astra Coupe (other regular 4-pot coupes may be available) and drop an LS crate lump in, then yes, you DO have a sleeper.
This thread is NOT a thread about modifying the existing power train of your car for more power. This thread is NOT about the traffic light GP. This thread is NOT about buying pissy little air-intake fans from Halfords and calling them a supercharger.

Why is it so hard to understand?

If he'd driven around with the kit in primer, then it'd be a sleeper - full-on barryboy outside, proper running gear inside rather than an asthmatic 1.0. biggrin

Currently there is a 3 door mk2 golf on eBay that is running full Impreza WRX running gear (awd) and engine, putting out about 280bhp. so 150bhp more than a standard car

It looks pretty awesome! In fact, I would love to own it.

Thing is, it's not a sleeper because it's based on a 3dr Gti. Is it was based on a 1.3cl still with the badges, then it would be.

while impressive and no doubt will suprise people that isn't a sleeper as it looks like a golf GTI.

But in fairness Ikarl did say quite clearly (and correctly) that it wasn't a sleeper!

Anyway this thread is great - we've had the usual 'already-fast-cars-that-look-fast-but-are-modified-to-be-a-bit-faster' stuff being but forward as 'sleepers' (e.g. that Subaru from a few pages back) - that sort of thing is par for the course for a sleeper thread. But now we're also getting cars that would surprise nobody by being quick, but which in fact aren't that quick at all (e.g. that diesel Merc from a few pages back). At this rate any vehicle that's capable of moving under it's own power will qualify.

I'm off to take a few snaps of my sleeper - a new Civic Type R with a trilby on the parcel shelf.

I've owned two Clio 172s and I would confidently say that this would pull away in the mid-range unless the 172 was right up at 5k-rpm. Also being an auto, there's very little finesse to getting it off the line and getting between 1st/2nd gear.

Honestly I've driven some quick cars and this E has surprised me. It's not as if this is the quickest car I own yet I think re-mapped this would be a pleasant surprise.

I'm not claiming it's the fastest thing either.

My A8 has 440lb of torque, it still only does the 0-60 in 5.something...
Only???

Perhaps my views of what's quick is a little off but I'd consider a car able to hit 60 in sub 6 seconds to be fairly quick and sub 8 seconds fairly nippy.

Is there a definitive 0-60 time for a sleeper? haha smile
That's brisk, 40-100 it's 'nippy' as you've got the weight moving and the torque can just give you a nice shove.

I like the bloke arguing about the definition of a sleeper. Marvellous. laughlaughlaughlaugh

My definition of a horse is anything that wears a saddle. I've put a saddle on my cat, so it's now a horse.

You can all call it what you want, I have a horse.

That's great. I especially love the mould!

(By way of balance, and in keeping with several other posts on this thread, I don't suppose you have a 911 turbo too that has been debadged?)
