Hmm, not so sure, when did you last see a Renault 19 in the wild ? mid 2000s ? for me, alarm bells would be ringing as there must be only a hundred or so of them left but for most it just looks like an aging, nondescript, shabby French hatchback of no particular interest.

Cool as hell though.

Would a debadged, remapped 135i on steelies count ?

That Renault 19 is a sleeper

A mid-range Mercedes or a Mitsubishi GTO that's been made to go a little faster is not a sleeper.

The Subaru?!
"Here's my wide-arched, spoiler'd, intake'd Subaru. People just think it's an old Subaru but it's really quick"

Ridiculous. Might's aswell be

"Here's my lime green Focus RS. People just think it's an old Focus but it's really quick. It's a sleeper"

I like the bloke arguing about the definition of a sleeper. Marvellous. laughlaughlaughlaugh
Well it's more intrigue really as unless there's a dictionary that defines every term in the petrolhead universe, it's open to interpretation. A horse is by definition a horse because biologically that's what it is, we're talking about whether one horse is ugly as sin but faster than another horse! haha

for me a sleeper is something that looks like a POS on the outside but has a ludicrously absurd engine on the insde. These standard looking Mercs with AMG lumps are not sleepers. A Q car is not a sleeper, its a Q car.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I guess I've never been of the thinking it has to look crap, just has to be unassuming.

"for most it just looks like an aging, nondescript, shabby French hatchback of no particular interest."

That's exactly why it works. Either you won't notice it, or you'll think it's a battered Renault 19 that gets bodged through another MOT every year but really shouldn't be on the road.

It's perfect. One of the best examples I've ever seen.

Yeah, it has a mixture of 2.0 16v megane coupe and clio 182 suspension stuff on the front with a Scenic RX4 triple skin subframe, R19 16V suspension on the back and Scenic brakes

People expect a BMW/Jaguar/Mercedes to be quick. I have an E220d and my mum's neighbour said 'I bet that shifts'. No really it doesn't, but people expect it too as it's a Mercedes.

People don't expect a doom blue Focus estate to hustle, or a Renault 19 with moss growing on it. These are sleepers. A Mercedes, Mitsubishi Coupe or Subaru Impreza really aren't sleepers

I'm sure plenty are familiar with this, but German lot Boba Motoring have put some lovely sleepers together.

Personal favourite is the AWD Mk2 Golf. Puts out a healthy 1233hp & 1094Nm!

There used to be some stonking Autobahn vids but I'm strugging to find them. Steel wheels make this just perfect!

There's more info at http://www.boba-motoring.de/, but might need to brush up on your German.

Late to the party and just spotted this.

I was driving on the bypass near me earlier this year and approached a roundabout looking to continue straight ahead. A Landrover approaches roundabout from my right, drives round and exits in front of me then floors it. Holy st this thing shifted. I was in a 220bhp caterham, foot on the floor, 8000rpm and barely kept up with it biggrin

Are you based in the north east per chance?

You appear to be the only one arguing.

The very fact you mentioned mpg means it is not a sleeper. Sleepers do not care about mpg. What you have there is a BARGE. There is a thread for people like you already.
Well I guess what I deem to be a sleeper/relatively quick car differs from yours. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine.
Which is wrong.

They look like alloys to me, cleverly chosen, but still alloys
