if the morris minor beats the 911 off the line its a sleeper

its never about a 15mile trip down the twistys

JJ
Why ?
I would say a 15 mile run up the arse of a 911 for a Moggie has a far higher sleeper value than a pile of st with a bigger engine that can go faster for 150 yards before digging itself into a hedge because there is a corner ahead..

but its that look on the face at a certain point in time

no one has time to race 15miles

your example is very specific and track based

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUyTMvDTqUg

who cares if it doesn't do the b3276 at 100mph

And the look on the 911 drivers face in his rear view mirror ? also priceless for the sleeper.

A sleeper is not "limited" to traffic light races......it is anything that makes the "fast car" think F Me !, be that a traffic light race or 15miles up his asre on the B34532.
I also think (imo) that any sleeper that can do the 15 mile run (better or equal to) is a better sleeper than the pile of poo that goes into a hedge when asked to do the very basics a car should be able to do.

All are sleepers I think, just one of them scores more "sleeper" points than the other due to it being a better car. They just surprise in different ways.
Top trumps to one that can do Both.

( + Traffic light racing is also a bit "yobo" to be fair smile )

100k 911 beaten off the line by a 5k sleeper - priceless wink

"but the fast talking suit man i in the showroom said my 100k would buy me the fastest car and make me look manly but a fiat cinquicento just destroyed me on the ring road......noooo!!"

if a car can out handle a 911 for 15miles down the twisties then i can't see how it would look like a sleeper tbh

coming across an opportunity on the back roads to show off your sleeper is rare

911 driven badly vs an mx5 well driven can see the mx5 leave the 911 behind but thats not sleeper

the traffic light GP is where it happens haha

I'd say sleeper is pretty much limited to drag races as once you get corners involved all bets are off.
Playing with people on bendy roads I have "beaten" all sorts of sports cars, M Power stuff, 911s, Loti etc in my standard diesel Skoda. Beaten a 911 and M3 around the Ring in a Corolla.
Wouldn't call either of those cars sleepers it's just sports cars with slow drivers.
If my Skoda could lunch a 911 off the lights then it would be impressive but it's nowhere near close. It's only got184bhp!

might do it from a roll on but never going anywhere quick off the line lol. Tis good though, you could certainly spook a lot with it.

Guy in a new Focus ST wagon desperate to get past my grandad 9-5 Aero yesterday on the way to work had a surprise as I let rip all of my 320 ponies

Not a fast car by today's standards but faster than many expect, and that's the point biggrin

That Skoda's got a whiff of knobishness about it. 'Ring sticker, headlight "eyebrows", M3-style door mirrors, and the pièce de résistance...

... Shotgun cartridges covering the wheel nuts.

Take the brows and cartridges off and you'd have a nice looking car! Not too big either would look pretty cool!

True but given that 99% of the modded ones of these are in the 250-300bhp range you are still going to be mightily surprised when its running neck and neck with you in your GTR/Lambo/Aston

I was thinking about this thread the other day. I have been bumbling around in an E63 AMG for the last 2 weeks and been thinking about driver psychology.

I figured I would never end up getting sleepered by one of the cars that people on here are raving about as I would just see them as boring normal cars and not bother having a play. You would look a bit of a dick trying to start a race against what appears to be a knackered 1.4 Astra in your 600bhp Merc.
So the drivers of these cars would never give the proper sleeper surprise unless they were driving round goading people into playing.

I was thinking someone would be much more likely to sleeper me if it was something like that VRS where I see it and think oh Barry here thinks he is fast with his 270bhp Octavia and then he proceeds to keep up or pull on me.
Similarly with my mates old Corsa. Anyone in a reasonably posh/ powerful car would have seen that and thought, heh boy racer chav boy thinks his car is fast, oh st it is!

So maybe a lightly modded/chavvy looking car would be a more successful sleeper in terms of catching more people out.

I don't personally consider the Skoda above as a sleeper, it is clearly performance orientated. A sleeper should be completely inconspicuous

not too sleepery considering all it will have is the performance of a warm hatch. Might surprise something like a Corsa VXR or a Clio but nowt serious. A standard Subaru Forester would outrun it/ take it off the lights at over 1 sec quicker 0-60

I have a 350bhp rear wheel drive Hyundai. Most people see the Hyundai badge here in the UK and assume its a slow, 4 pot FWD car (or a GT86 with a body kit).

That Skoda is undoubtedly quick and a great tool.

However its not remotely a sleeper. It looks modified

It does but there is nobody alive that is going to see a 10+ year old Barried Skoda normally worth £2-3k and think, oh its got different wheels and headlight eyebrows its obviously 600bhp.
It looks exactly the same as one my mate used to have and that was only about 250bhp so when it minces you in your M3/911/GTR you are going to be somewhat shocked which is surely what defines a sleeper. Think of it like a lightweight boxer, looks a bit fighty, usually plays with the little fish but this one can knock out Mike Tyson. Nobody would put their money on that.
