but its that look on the face at a certain point in time

no one has time to race 15miles

your example is very specific and track based

who cares if it doesn't do the b3276 at 100mph

And the look on the 911 drivers face in his rear view mirror ? also priceless for the sleeper.

A sleeper is not "limited" to traffic light races......it is anything that makes the "fast car" think F Me !, be that a traffic light race or 15miles up his asre on the B34532.
I also think (imo) that any sleeper that can do the 15 mile run (better or equal to) is a better sleeper than the pile of poo that goes into a hedge when asked to do the very basics a car should be able to do.

All are sleepers I think, just one of them scores more "sleeper" points than the other due to it being a better car. They just surprise in different ways.
Top trumps to one that can do Both.

( + Traffic light racing is also a bit "yobo" to be fair smile )
That 270bhp Astra is definitely a sleeper. Like you said, a sleeper isn't limited to traffic lights but it doesn't have to excel at everything. Picture duel carriageway, rolling start, that Astra would surprise a lot of cars; it's a sleeper. Take say another 20 year old st box, give it 270bhp and 4wd, it will be a sleeper at the lights. In the twisties, take a new Fiesta ST like used to have at 230-240bhp, then add track tyres and reduce the weight and put a good driver in it, it will see off 911's (insert any sports car) on B roads with an average driver at the wheel; it's a sleeper then in my eyes in respect to the 911 as your average Porsche driver just won't expect a wee Fiesta to be that quick.

I think you and a lot of others are over thinking what a sleeper is, to me a sleeper is any car that is quicker than it should be but looks un-assuming. That means there are countless possibilities of what sleeper can be. Relax and just enjoy some of the motors being posted on here, the thread isn't titled 'discussion of what I believe a sleeper exactly is'.

Guy in a new Focus ST wagon desperate to get past my grandad 9-5 Aero yesterday on the way to work had a surprise as I let rip all of my 320 ponies

Not a fast car by today's standards but faster than many expect, and that's the point biggrin
This precisely, all a sleeper needs to do is surprise someone else, be quicker than expected.

I think sleepers only really work in straight lines as once you throw corners and driver skill/balls into it then the talents of the car are pretty much wiped out. you could put my Mrs in my 400+bhp Scoob and me in her old 1.3 Swift and I would leave her by miles on a b road.

haha - but many people get it totally wrong wink

"quicker" is the subjective bit. its almost impossible to prove a car is quicker in the twisties (driver/willingness to drive fast/no overtake/not side by side) BUT its much easier in a straight line drag.

48 pages in and some people still don't actually know the definition of a sleeper. It's really not rocket science.

Both the Ford magazines have issues out on sleepers at the moment, obviously they're not 100% sleepers as they have to be interesting enough to grab the eye on a magazine cover but none the less.

I was linked to this thread by a friend, yes id say the term sleeper is over used

My fiat i would say is a sleeper, 232hp awd and as stock as i can make it look, similar ride height wheels only 1" bigger, mudflaps to hide yokos etc

where as my "rovaru" isnt a real sleeper but modified in way, looks very similar to stock (currently) but lowered on bigger wheels etc etc but people wouldnt expect it to have a 3.0 H6 subaru engine and awd (still building currently it)

For those who still don't have a clue, and are still posting pictures of fast flashy cars, THESE are sleepers!

beer

That's a good way to make an entrance, what a first post.

I've always thought a Fiat Cinq with some Panda 4x4 and a Uno turbo engine would be hilarious , what is the secret to your build.? much Fiat involved or far more custom akin to your Rover Roo swap - which is AWESOME! , I though a MG/Rover with the 220/620/800 Turbo swap was reasonably rare but a boxer 6 is totally different.

The fiat ive had for over 7 years now, progressed from a 899cc 8v to a 1.2 16v then 1.4 16v then onto 1.4 16v turbo and slapped on a AWD setup as it was near undrivable with 221hp and 286nm via the front wheels.

The floor/chassis on the fiat is completely unmodified in anyway i managed to raid the fiat parts bin along with a few custom items (billet hubs etc) got it all under there with a shortened propshaft and 4 new driveshafts, i havent put a great detail of how it was converted up as well it was alot of effort and the fiat cinquecento scene is well full oh you know whats that do nothing but slate me and the car, rant over

But as you can probably guess the ratios on the 4x4 gearbox are just all wrong, it will do 117mph (satnav speed) @7000rpm in 5th and if you watch the pod video im change to 2nd gear at the staging light and tbh i am really disappointed i only managed to pull a 13.9 @102mph

Here is a build thread on the fiat
http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/125056/1997...

As for the rovaru ive always liked rovers really in a way and thought "hmm id like the uks fastest rover 25/mg zr" so i guesstimated that i could get the 3.0 H6 to fit with no proper measurements and it does fit very well too

Im currently only going to finish all the welding off on the rovaru then moth ball it and finish it for USC 2018, once welding is done i can swap it over for the mk4 supra rolling shell i bought and do a really fast build on that for USC 2017, it should be there with a cummins diesel engine wink

ROvaru build thread if anyone is interested (currently still being built)
