I know someone with a slightly tatty and innocuous looking BMW 330 estate... which has a supercharger. Around 400bhp.
Would need to see pics, but most people would expect a 3.0l BMW to be quick

most expect a 3 series to be quick anyway. so regardless it's not a sleeper.

330 BHP 4.6L all steel bottom end Rover V8 in my Triumph TR8. We never got the tR8 in Oz, so anyone who notices it, thinks it's a 2.0L TR7. Well they do, unless they come up from behind it, & hear the beautiful music it plays on it's twin 2.75" exhausts. Tried for 3" but just could not fit it.

Chatting with an old school friend I've not seen for many years he sent me a pic of his old Beetle...with 911 engine and suitably uprated brakes etc Wheels could have been a bit more subtle but apparently it was a lot of fun...

Love it. I was told these conversions used to be done but I'd never heard of or seen pics of a real one. thumbup

Did they cut the rear bulkhead out, or cut out the rear valence?

Not a fast car by today's standards but faster than many expect, and that's the point biggrin
This precisely, all a sleeper needs to do is surprise someone else, be quicker than expected.
Used to enjoy surprising many in my 'knackered' old 850 T5 estate.

not mine, but the guy further ups build thread for his cinquechento http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/125056/1997...
That's brilliant!
This wins the thread so far. Honestly take a look at that build thread, so awesome!

That's not your regular "throw another engine in" sleeper, that's had some serious graft and innovation to get it to where it is! I love it!

I was linked to this thread by a friend, yes id say the term sleeper is over used

My fiat i would say is a sleeper, 232hp awd and as stock as i can make it look, similar ride height wheels only 1" bigger, mudflaps to hide yokos etc

where as my "rovaru" isnt a real sleeper but modified in way, looks very similar to stock (currently) but lowered on bigger wheels etc etc but people wouldnt expect it to have a 3.0 H6 subaru engine and awd (still building currently it)

I'd love a few more details as well, the Cinquecento sounds like an awesome little machine thumbup

Trust me you won't see many with a 911 engine in. It's an expensive heavy lump that doesn't fit unless you cut the rear bulkhead out or have a third of the engine hanging out the back. There's a red one that I raced a few times, it looked good in my rear view mirror laugh

You can go quicker for less money with a flat 4

A Bug with 500 hp can look like a sleeper, if all radiators are smartly positioned

so they get their airflow from the modified floor.

2-seater, bulkhead behind front seats, behind sits a 3.6l Audi V8 with twin turbos.

Bug floorpan, tube chassis on top, Porsche axles & brakes under discreetly wide fenders.

Exhaust tips are fake, 2 x 3" blow out of sight.

Chewed 11 transmissions before a beefed-up Audi auto box could cope with 500 hp.

I like that. Looking at the engine shot I was surprised to see it has a Duracell battery, I only imagine them making AAs lol

320hp is still fast by todays standard and everyone expects a Saab 9-5 to be remapped, so not quite a sleeper pass.
