Tax free motoring in the classic Fiat Panda, in just twelve years.

Difficult to know which is more likely to make it that far - Government policy or the car.

If they do roll the VED exemption forward it means cars will be 40 years old before they benefit. This would impact the value of cars becoming due in the next year or so as well. I can't see many people thinking, what ho I've just forked out £NNN for whatever but I will get all that back in 40 years time when I sell it as a VED exempt classic. So I think anything that survives that long will either be desirable, or maybe be one of those owned for decades "kerbside classics" you see in daily use. There is a Morris Ital in regular use around here and I think it's really funny that it will be a tax free classic now, but then it's part of our motoring heritage as well and a rarer survivor than a 308.
Ital only produced from 1980. It'll be a while before they are given "historic" status and for that particular car, I question whether it should at all!

I'm speechless, they are introducing something to help motorists and improve their car owning experiences.....I'm sure they will counteract it next year with another scheme to destroy the motorist.

Spending money on roads is very welcome.

Or put another way - for the first time in living memory a government has put out a budget that gives a net benefit to motorists. Under the circumstances I couldn't call it anything but a pleasant surprise and more than I was expecting. And cheaper beer too...

Every budget always leaves someone somewhere with something to complain about - but for the first time ever, PH would appear not to be the place to bh about it...

Oh : this thread is in General Gassing isn't it paperbag

I'm very pleased actually although mainly because I assume I will now be able to get my Daytona into the forward parking at the Goodwood Revival!

I don't like the SORN renewal cancellation, now we have nothing to guilt trip us into getting into the garage and fixing those broken beauties hehe

As the owner of a 1973 car I do like this news. I'm sure they'll claw the money back in others ways though...

I think the SORN is a definite improvement. I suspect that the annual renewal was more about revenue than anything else.
It costs you nothing to SORN a car but this will, hopefully, save the DVLA (and so us) money as they won't have to process SORN renewals once a year.

Good news regarding the SORN thing, having to renew it annually was a total hassle, very easy to forget especially if you are overseas or something.

From the BBC,

"April's 3p rise in beer duty scrapped. Instead, beer duty to be cut by 1p"

But in reality hardly anyone will put the price of a pint down 1p so it'll just stay the same.

We may have proof here that selfishness is genetic - call Oxford University stat.

It takes most people into their late-20s at least to decide they want everything for themselves and fk society - to be born with that approach, OMG!
