It takes most people into their late-20s at least to decide they want everything for themselves and fk society - to be born with that approach, OMG!

It's more that it takes people until their late 20s to realise a utopia where everything is provided by the state, using debt they'll never repay, is unworkable. wink

With classics that span the cut-off date, some otherwise identical cars have free road tax, others get charged ~£200 a year.

So if you buy an MGB and intend to keep it for five years, it's worth spending up to £1000 more on a 1972 model rather than a 1974 one, because you'll make that back in the annual free road tax saving. Hence the 1972 car would be worth more in the market.

The change means that OP's 1973 car is now valued like the 1972 tax-exempt one, rather than the 1974 taxable one. Hence it's just gone up in value.

Aww. Is there any hint ot'll be rolling?

If my poor 1988 Astra deserves anything after 25 years and 215k miles of massive abuse it's historical status. It wasn't that easy to stop it dissolving over the last 14 years and I'm just past half way. :s

Other than that not too bad I guess.

One year on the VED exemption? I actually think that is a bit pathetic. I thought the system was originally introduced when vehicles were 25 years old and that was obviously years ago.
in 19 years my 21 year old car will qualify for tax exemption. Not great news

Although I can't complain, it does seem a bit pointless to move the exemption by one year.
Rounds it off to 40 years. Maybe will become a rolling date again?
It can't be 40 years because I was born in 1974 and there is no way I'm almost... oh, I'm officially old! Shame being tax free doesn't apply to people too in that case smile

What age does the realisation take hold that there are more than 2 options in the world?

Hint: It's somewhere between your age and my age I suspect smile

I'm not sure what to make of it all...

Or "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts"?

I can`t really believe this, some good news for a change on VED on classics, and particularly pertinent to me, as my TR6 NOW fits into the criteria.........biggrin

Apologies for the unashamed pic-whoring ! hehe

Randomly (or not hmmm) I received a letter from some debt collection agency affiliated with the DVLA this morning saying I'd not renewed the SORN on a motorbike I had a few years back. They are after £80.

I wonder where that fine stands now given that it's for an offense that now doesn't exist.

Somebody mentioned that car tax "vehicle excise duty" has been frozen, but it has NOT. So time to renew my car tax online before I get shafted by £10!!!
Many of them have increased by an average of £5 or £10

Great so my 20 year old car still costs more than my 7 year old car to tax as it predates the CO2 emissions check. Even though it will pass a cat test that it does not have. confused

Ooh, that might make my MGB tax exempt. I'll have to find out the date of manufacture.
