I wish the looks would grow on me, nothing so far...
Exactly how I feel, and I see these daily.
+1 I think unfortunately that the current XJ is not ageing that well, and although I have no firm stats to back it up, the bankers in Canary Wharf I see daily are all in recently registered S Class, 7-ers and A8s without exception...

I love the looks, and it has seriously displaced the boring kraut wagons in Mayfair and Belgravia. Not just for the limo business but I also see a couple of Gentlemen driven Supersports.
Classier end of town really.
Absolutely. Any BMW 7s, Merc S's or A8's at Canary Wharf will be exec taxis for senior bankers and lawyers. Chaffeur corporations like Addison Lee and TriStar run fleets of them.

In Mayfair and St James' is all about private banks and independent wealth. They seem to pick Jaguars and Range Rovers to ferry them around.

The best reason yet to get an XJ instead.

I am referring to the acceleration...0-60 time - 5 seconds...it did that 10 years ago.

When you consider an E63 does it in 3.6 seconds and an M5 in a little over 4...it seems to be playing catchup.
That's a bit misleading though isn't it? That figure is for the LHD only 4 Matic 4WD and it's technically more of an XFR rival. Available in the UK if you ask apparntly, but still only in LHD.
Indeed - a fairer comparison would be the S65AMG, which, according to the Benz website, hits 60 in 4.4 seconds, maxes at 155mph, and will set you back £165k. Could see myself in one of these in ab out ten years time, when I've outgrown my XKR...

Slightly unfair, let's not carried away with the generalisations now people. Although in this case I am also massively in favour of the XJ- seems to be a positive breath of fresh air in comparison to the obvious rivals!

I love this.

Had an X300 and X308 XJR in th epast, and they are superb machines.

It's just awesome smoking people at the lights, as most people have absolutely no idea of what lurks beneath!

The SuperSport would be a tad more discreet than this, but I wouldn't say no to either!

It doesn't have the bank-vault solidity of the S-class
Have you tried the new (facelifted) W221 S Class? Isn't as solid as the previous models, I can assure you!

Canary Wharf's a dull place. You see plenty of XJs in the City now and there are absolutely loads doing limo duty in Mayfair.

yes I have driven one, and in fact might have bought it if it wasn't for the patchy service history. IMHO the W221 is better built than the W220, but it's still no W140!

Others have mentioned the attitude towards luxury saloons in Canary Wharf and the City. I work in the City and I agree with the comments. Drive by in a LWB S-class and nobody bothers. Drive by in a LWB XJ and heads literally turn. People stop and stare. They really do look good in the metal. But they need to be LWB, to accentuate that coupe-like roofline.

Next time you go in one, try moving the dashboard console - on the one I had, it felt like it was coming off.

Try that in a W140, and it won't budge!

But yes - totally agree, these new XJ's are stunning machines and definitely something different and a pleasure to see.

IMO (and mine only smile), when it's wafting me home in the dark and rain, in a sea of cow, tree and phosphorus blue lighting, with a warm arse and Adele crooning through the stereo, not to mention the spaceship gear selector, it's not aged at all. It's perfect.
Agreed. I am currently driving the V6 AWD version. Drove home through freezing rain and ice the other night at 80mph all the way, it's like a luxury freight train!
A pic.
