Did a B7 RS4 not appeal, Chris?
Think it's a bit like the whole 'Conti GT/Footballer' thing....

...other owners of such cars can really influence a buyers decision...

Great cars, the B8 S4 3litre V6T (Supercharged) unit is a much better motor than the old boat anchor B7 S4 4.2 V8.
It's no lightweight, but the 4.2 v8 is a flippin' glorious engine.

I know, I had one briefly in an A8...The old V8 is indeed a glorious engine but not as good as the newer V6T in this application imhocoffee

75 is a whole lot from a remap alone, the most I have seen in the past is circa 35-45bhp increase, unless this is at the flywheel rather than than the wheels, which could then be slightly more possible
A before and after on the dynos would clear it up....

Nice car Chris - something I lust for at the minute.

I'm currently driving a 2002 B6 A4 Avant, which I have spent a fair few quid on over the past year, putting things right along with a few modifications.
(for some bizarre reason I like slightly older cars, which at the point of purchase start needing lots of work doing - next time I'll go newer, I swear) - the thing just has a terrible engine, which is one of the cars only downsides (2.5TDi).

I'm curious as to why you say your S4 may require re-bushing.
I have just replaced all bushes, suspension arms & ball joints on the front of my B6 A4, I was quite surprised that after 145,000 miles of use the bushes (with the exception of one) were in my mind, good condition - no splits, minimal wear.

Are you replacing due to wear or are you looking at upgrading them (i.e polyurethane) at that kind of milage I would still expect it to drive not to differently as to when it was new.

Even better deal if you watch Chris' video he posted earlier. The same car was £48k when he tested it!

Ours came to the end of its contract hire period on Friday, after three years and 35k I decided to buy it from Audi. They are bloody brilliant cars.

The 15k price intrigues me though, methinks you have had the benefit of a nice family deal there. There doesn't seem to be many about, if any at sub 20k, cheapest avant is a slip under 20k with 75k miles.

I can't wait to read all about it in the coming months! They're certainly tempting at that price.

That's on US spec 93 octane too, so 400 on UK premium sounds eminently do-able.
FYI - US fuel isn't measured in RON, and it isn't as 'rubbish' as us Brits think smile

Ah - I've not driven the new V6T engine so couldn't comment. Though I would say that, for some reason, I think that the V8 with a manual is a better engine than with the auto - I think a lot of its charms (low end torque and high end power) are hidden by an auto box. A small point but I rarely get to discuss the engine in my car, so thought I'd make it anyway hehe

I mean seriously? it's a 3yo series production audi estate, that hasn't been washed in a while that's all. I know CH swans round in shiney new flash motors the entire time, but a 3yo audi, even one that perhaps hasn't been treated to a wash every 3days isn't exactly SHEDing now is it ;-)

Patina of age!!! hahahaha its a dirty Audi rep mobile with a V6 engine, there's two older ladies (they are both very grey) round my way that drive them.

Old E-Type Jags and other classics have patina not the above.

I'm sure it'll be throwing up its big bills soon.

How much of its life has it spent sideways? New bushes etc sound like its had a very hard life already.

Do like them though!

The remap in question essentially prevents the Supercharger from dumping boost pressure at around 5500 rpm and allows it to provide full boost up to the redline at 7200 rpm. That, combined with the fact that the 333bhp quoted by Audi for the S4 is quite a bit below the actual output (to differentiate it from the RS cars) which is more around 350-360 bhp and the quoted, claimed output of 400-410 bhp isn't extreme.

I agree Chris.....the S4 is very discreet and under estimated or simply bypassed by the less informed.

Did you also look at the APR software option with interchangeable programming via the cruise control....a nice discreet and OE feel to it...you will probably remember the Porker Turbo you had mapped by them back at Evo....they are now very much part of tuning with VW Motorsport at Milton Keynes and support the 24hr Scirrocco's in the father land!!

Their stage 2 kit with the pulley upgrade is very tempting giving 400bhp at the wheels!!

I too have been deliberating B7 RS4 or S4.

I think the B8 makes more sense due to carbon build up on RS4's which requires a de coke at a grand a go at MRC. They also suffer DRC issues but can be resolved by new units or KW's!! The B7 shape is starting to look a little dates except in RS4 form (especially the Avant) and they still command real presence. Ithink the estate is the prettier of the two shapes and look sooo much better at the rear.

The MPG is pretty woeful on RS4's but the look of the car still draws me.

With a brake upgrade you are planning I thought a few track excursions will be just the ticket...a real wolf in sheep's clothing.....there's so much scope for upgrades for track work available on these cars. An M3 whether E46 or E92 will have it's work cut out aagainst a stage 2 S4....and with AWD on our wet roads it makes a compelling package.

Looking forward to seeing how this one pans out.

I'm a big fan of discrete performance cars - especially estates.

Good to see Chris trying out what most of us end up doing - buying used and tweaking. Most car journos seem to be focused only on whatever shiny new stuff the manufacturers are thrusting at them..

Having the sport diff is a must on these if you are looking for one IMO. Most of the early cars people didn't bother ticking the box it seems.

MRC stage 1 is around 460ps (Remap and a filter)

If that's the same family member he wrote about a few years ago who left a banana rotting into the leather of a B10 wagon( which he incidentally bought) its a wonder he survived childhood without contracting salmonella or foot and mouth on the way to school.
