It looks exactly like an A4, which looks exactly like the A6.....

They should stop giving their cars different numbers and offer them in sizes instead.... Small, Medium and Large
Much the same with BMW of late is it not?
yes
Visual Brand Identity.
tbh same with many brands these days, not restricted to car design either.
I have a better name for it - Dreary Corporate Homogenisation

It's a fking scourge

Looks like a tarty Skoda Rapid on my phone.
Similar size but different chassis and the smallest engine in the A3 will be same as the biggest engine in Rapid

If only there was a way to somehow combine the 1-series (which has a decent interior and chassis but mings externally) with this (which looks good from the outside but has the same tacky, "don't make the little car as nice as the other ones, ja?" interior detailing that mars the Mercedes CLA).

That, and...

... they may as well have just put, "this is a car for a pointy-shoed 'team leader' in a cheap grey suit" in the press release and have done with it, really.

.. I believe this is called aspiration. Don't knock it. Those in their A3's will perhaps one day be the same grey haired/no haired aggressive, outside lane hogging, short-fused business man who aspires to an A5 but failed condoms and a demanding wife confine him to an A6 or a Q5. (AKA the typical PH Director type)

Looks pretty decent, interior is OK but not all that, Sat Nav looks like an efterthought though.

Is this going to get longitudinal engines to have non-Haldex quattro? Looks quite nice, although I'm not sure what's wrong with the A4...
Apart from the fact its become a huge 5 series almost in size monstrosity, the A3 will make for a nice compact and nimble saloon, I'd go this way rather than a bloated A4 ..... if you want and A4 sized car the A5 looks better .. imho ...
I was about to disagree, but checking out the B6 vs B8 it's grown 20cm longer and 10cm wider! Comparing the A3 saloon and B6 A4 it seems they've gone slightly smaller than that, guaranteed to feel pretty tiny inside then!

Looks nice from some angles, but rather stubby from others.

You pick the very smallest saloon they'll sell you and then it looks stubby? hehe

"Small" doesn't mean "badly proportioned"... or at least it shouldn't have to.

Much better looking than the droopy CLA but I can't see it being a big seller over here. Why would you have an S3 saloon instead of an S3 Sportback?

So just a slightly shorter A4 then. What's the point?

Just like the Jetta is a slightly smaller Passat, because there is a market in certain countries for such a vehicle

I actually really like that, and im never usually a fan of saloon cars

I actually quite like that. I much prefer saloons to hatchbacks and estates, so if I was in the market for one of these then I would probably buy the saloon.

Or a used S4, but that is not the point.

I wonder if they'll add a 2 door coupe model to go up against the 1 series coupe. (No one counts the Scirocco as a coupe do they?) There would appear to be a market for one judging by 1er coupe sales.

Could that see a return of the A2 moniker? There would then be potential for an A2 SportBack to go up against the Merc CLA.
