It's an A3, so based on the MQB (Golf) platform...which is also why the proportions are horrible next to the B5 and other older cars. I know the reasons for it, but it still seems ridiculous that cars are becoming ever more bloated when the roads we drive them on become more congested.

The B5 was a great looking design but that was about it.

The A3 saloon is a great looking car, but actually has decent engines, gearboxes and handling to complete the package.

I like the detailing, but the saloon still looks like a dumpy, oddly-proportioned afterthought. - I'd take the hatch. As for the handling; apparently there have been big advances with the latest-gen S3 but I would still wait for the M135i go get the LSD option and take one of those instead (3-door, manual).
