When SPECS were introduced they worked in specific pairs only but my understanding is that is no longer the case as they are a bit "smarter" so can calculate your speed between any two cameras. I always set the cruise to an indicated 56 in these zones and never had an issue.

This. You can do indicated 60 and be within the enforced limit. Otherwise why would you see half the traffic doing this? Obviously they don't get tickets or else they'd all be bannned.
Yes, because there are no un-insured, banned drivers driving on the road these days?! If they're daft enough to risk their licence, they're daft enough to drive whilst banned.

Sorry, just watched Motorway Cops, think the adrenaline is going, so many bad people on the roads!!

Thinking about this some more. I would be suprised if the cameras work at night. The car headlights would be shining towards the cameras. So how would they read the numberplates? Or do they have other methods rather than visable light, such as infa red too?

They do use infra red. Plus half of them tend to have spot lighting applied to the carriageway where needed.

Some of them face the front of the car and some of them face the back, so I suppose even in the dark they can nab you if you get it wrong enough.

I just obey the limit and a lot of others do too, but I've noticed that in the eastbound direction, almost everyone speeds up after Clackets and goes through the last two cameras at whatever speed they want.

I daren't do that, I don't think there's anything worthwhile to be gained, it's not worth the risk.

Have been through the section in question many times at an av. up to 75mph. No workforce in road and no tickets. Not banned or uninsured, just capable of adjusting my speed to suit the conditions via use of eyes, ears and brain. wink

The gantry ones are not turned on at the moment, fill yer boots.
Any idea when they will be activated and if they will only work when the variable limit facility is in use ?

I've heard stories that the cameras only work when the average limit facility is active on other parts of the M25 ???

Not sure if this is true as I'm fairly convinced they "should" go off when anything goes through them at 90+ MPH ??
Sorry no idea, it was reported in the local news a few weeks ago that the northern section hadn't got the right approvals required to activate. They will do at some point though... Regarding the Western section, if you can ever find a time when you can break the speed limit then you're doing well.

I think that the newer, smarter camera's dont just go Start, End, Start End, but more
S1, S2, E1, S3, E2, S4, S5, E3, E4, E5.
So it's between any 2 marked points.
What really annoys me the the lorry drivers who get right up your arse when you're trying to go 50-52.

The accepted "truth" is the gantry cameras work on the usual 10%+2 rules ONLY when the variable speed limit is active. When inactive don't operate until 100mph.

Having spent a lot of time on the M25, I believe this to be approximately correct.

this story came out a few month ago
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/9740880/M...

which is why you will find plenty of people on here who's friends have had tickets from them, but no one seems to have had one personally

can't answer the OP question on if they are working now, that story was now 4-5 months ago
things could have changed

The OP is asking about the roadwork average speed cameras, not the variable limit ones though, they are between junctions 5,6, and possibly continue to 7 and 8 as well.
