Although definitely the most exciting new Jaguar in well over a decade, I think they made a mistake by launching the convertible first.

I'm in no doubt it's a great car and it really does look good in the flesh, but basically it's a roadster with some powerful engines to choose from.
There's nothing wrong with that of course, but I reckon it's a major mistake to take on the 911 with what basically is a roadster.
If the coupe were launched first, or alongside the convertible, it would have stood a much better chance of being taken seriously as a 911 competitor for several reasons:

-It's a better looking shape
-The driving dynamics will be better because of the roof
-luggage space wouldn't be a clear win for the german rival

Maybe the coupe wasn't production ready at the time of the launch, but much like with the previous 'true sportscar' Jaguar made, it would have been the right decision to present the closed car anyway, just like they did in 1961.
It's easier to engineer a coupe from a cabrio than the other way around.

Looks like a very nice car indeed, sadly I will never be affording one for at least 10 years. Can we have in the mean time this as the photo of the week, I'd love a nice high res version to drool over as my work desktop.

Porsche blah blah blah. Yawn. Pistonheads is so predictable.

It's clearly a great car. Look on it as an Aston Vantage competitor (in V8S form) and it's stonking value.

Be happy that a British company has built a great car. Lift yourselves above the gloom of austerity and celebrate the fact.

But most of all, stop crapping on about default Porsches.

Looking forward to the manual coupé smile
yes

It's a brilliant new car and will sell well. We've been waiting for it since 1975. Well done JLR. What a fantastic few years since TATA took over. Brilliant new XJ, fantastic Evoque, utterly incredible new FFRR, great new Sport and now a truly exceptional new Jaguar sports car. And more to come..

It's British and it's great. Be proud, I am.
Agree with both of you!

This.

Everyone thinks that the Porsche 911 will either make or break this car like it is the only default choice yawn, yawn. On the launch events I went to, there were a number of 911 drivers there who wanted it as they had brought their 911 because there was nothing else really available.

And for those who haven't seen one in the flesh, it is wider than an R8 so certainly has road presence.

Final point, for those saying it is over-priced, against what? Porsche Boxster? See above for why this does not necessarily stand.

Problem is, despite all Jaguar's attempts, as an Open Top Sports car any buyer is going to look at this. And then look at a Porsche Boxster which is the thick end of £10k cheaper. Now if they made a Coupe version and offered a Soft top along side it, they might get away with it, but as it is it's too expensive. It doesn;t directly compare to a 911. Also a lot fo people 'will always buy a 911' because it's a Porsche 911. It's still some peoples idea of the Ultimate 'affordable' Sports car.
By following your argument anyone going in to a Porsche showroom will look at the Boxster and then get an MX5 because it is a cheaper open top sports car. But they don't, life isn't like that.

I had thought that about the SL too - plenty of people buy those and some maybe want a car more overtly sporting so the F-Type will certainly fit that role. At the end of the day the only car Jag don't want to take too many sales from is the XK, but that will change with the next generation to make it compete in a different category.

Why? A wider track gives added stability. Being wide has not done the R8 any harm in driveability and F Type only slightly wider after all.

Isnt it a competitor to the SL and AMV8? I dont know, just me being logical and thinking of similar cars.

No, I dont really care what the manufacturer or the press say.

Its not a Boxster or Cayman rival...thats pretty fking logically obvious. Its not a 911 rival, again pretty fking logically obvious. So you look where its logical rivals are...and you end up with the SL and AMV8.

They seem to sell well, so the Jag has a chance.

I just find wide cars thoroughly unpleasant to drive on the rather narrow roads around here. Even my Elise feels uncomfortably wide to me on occasion, there's no way I'd ever buy anything wider than a 911 with the aim of having fun in it.

I'm sure lots of people will love it, but it's definitely not for me (not that I could justify ever the price of a new one anyway).

I have seen about 3 so far.....certainly my 2012 XK Convertible will be going in for p/x when the factory cars come up for sale late 13 early 14.

Interesting to see if there is any premium on prices for the first few months, but sure as hell it will depreciate once all the hype has gone

all of that and we don't get a comparison on how it drives compared to a 911? is it a 911 rival?

bare in mind this is the cab version....i'd like to know what it's like compared to a 991 cab and 991 S cab.

Aston need to bring out something new. All their range is old hat, and they're jumping on the Porsche band-wagon of derivation. Hat's off to Jag, and the Sutcliffe review from Autocar just sums it up perfectly.

I also think there's some people on here that just don't want JLR to do well, despite what they bring out.

Wider than an R8? That surprises me.

I see 3 or 4 of these F-Types daily (all V6/S models mind you) and they don't look anywhere near as wide as an R8 on the road. They do have tremendous road presence though and look far fresher than any Aston or Porsche.

Does anyone else think that 1600kg is heavy for a V6 2 seater? Lovely looking car though and I hope they sell well.

I think it looks great, it should be a different demographic to the XK, which to me always whiffs of Gin, Golf Clubs, pink polo necks and Cravats a bit, well the first one did, the current one less so but this doesnt. It seems to split the entry 911 and Boxster/Cayman price ranges down the middle, I would drive both and see which I preffered.

Some people need to get a grip. This is a beautiful car by the most successful British manufacturer at present. It's not priced for volume sales, the many people that want one and can afford one will buy it.
If you can't afford it, don't moan about it.
