Friend got burgled while upstairs asleep, when coming down in the morning to lack of TV & computer etc etc he noticed the lovely scumbags had all the kitchen knifes scattered around, presumably to have them close at hand if disturbed by the householder.

Nice types to have roaming around downstairs in the house at night with the family asleep 'eh.
I went to the scene of a burglary after the smashed window first thing I saw was an upside down table with 3 legs, cop saw me looking and explained the burglar had immediately pulled a leg off to use as a weapon.

Didn't the law change to "proportional" force?
So if they have a knife, you get a bigger knife, if they have a bigger knife, you have a gun etc...

So if someone comes into my bedroom with a knife, I can shoot them?

Yes, as long as you don't shoot to kill*

when you've just been woken up by 3 men in masks I don't think you would be in a state to judge how you are shooting...

hehe

Numerous shots could then be classed as "using excessive force". It cooked my brain talking with him about it as there are numerous loopholes in regards to defending your property.

Either way it your own judgement call on the day something happens?

My call however if someone breaks in they are not there to make me a cup of tea so they will get hurt or ?

Some people have not got it in them anyway.

I know its going a bit off topic, however look at Tony Martin no-one is going to break into his house again. He did what he thought was right at the time, many people agreed with what he did. He is alive and not a victim on a police list.

Given that one of the tenets of gun safety is to "not point a firearm at anything you do not intend to destroy", I'm pretty sure that if you don't intend to kill you shouldn't be pointing a gun at anyone.

Also, dead men tell no tales wink

Tony Martin would have been alright if he hadn't shot them in the back as they were running away.

Well they could not run backwards. He did not ask them, to break in to his house did he. Front or back a hit is a hit.

It's actually quite daunting to be woken by 3 people at the end of your bed, shining a light in your eyes waking you up shouting how they'll kill you if you don't hand over your keys whilst your half asleep and very disorientated with your wife in bed as well and a child in another room.

You have no idea what they're willing to do for the keys, whether your family will be at risk or able to see if they have knives, bats or other items which they probably don't plan to tickle you with.

I have car insurance no car is more valuable to me than my family so whilst my keys are visible they're not in the most difficult place in the world to find. I was burgled 2011 it's not a fun thing to go through.

House is well alarmed now but if someone wants something they'll take it regardless.
And I personally cannot believe the rights these scum have if they get shot by the owner with a legally owned shotgun etc.

Which would be legally kept in a locked gun safe in a safe place. Opening the safe to remove a shot gun would surely change 'acting in self defence' to a premeditated intent to do so. If the gun wasn't in the safe and loaded the law would come down on you extremely hard.

You need to consider whether having the car on your drive 24hrs a day will attract attention, which in most cases will be yes. Garage security can be overcome if they know what they are doing, but i am a big fan of the garage - if you park another car in front of the garage door it makes the job more and more complicated and time consuming.

You can also make the job more noisy by having stuff inside the garage in front of the car, such as a big heavy jack and axle stands which will be noisy to move, and hopefully wake you up. If all else fails try this - i met a guy in South Africa who never shares his car - he rigged a rape alarm under the seat to be triggered by seat rail movement, which is novel if perhaps extreme.
Have to say I agree with this. If you have a car like this you have just got to take precautions which means you can't leave the car on the drive during he day and just parking it in the garage at night....it's got to be kept in the garage at all times unless you live somewhere where the car cannot be seen from the road. You also have to make sure you're never followed home.

I don't really understand how if you have good security they can break in steal the keys whilst someone is asleep. Surely the alarm system should be triggered by the break in ? I'd also have a dog as we do....anyone comes anywhere near our gate and he's barking like mad. It's a pain in the arse but in London it's worth it.

We live in London and have on street parking....the good thing about that is that it's not clear which car belongs to which house so the scumbags aren't going to break into several properties looking for the keys. Flip side of that is that it's to steal the car in other ways or wheels etc which I know to my cost.
