I've been followed home before, sure there was no malicious intent - probably just curious.

I just did a lap of some local streets, and they were with me as I doubled back on myself - so not imagining it.

The wife had an XR3 I cabriolet in 1990 , she was doing a course at college and got followed home twice by the same car.

Put the car up for sale and sold it a week later.

In those days hot hatches were getting pinched 10 a penny around our way.

You need to consider whether having the car on your drive 24hrs a day will attract attention, which in most cases will be yes. Garage security can be overcome if they know what they are doing, but i am a big fan of the garage - if you park another car in front of the garage door it makes the job more and more complicated and time consuming.

You can also make the job more noisy by having stuff inside the garage in front of the car, such as a big heavy jack and axle stands which will be noisy to move, and hopefully wake you up. If all else fails try this - i met a guy in South Africa who never shares his car - he rigged a rape alarm under the seat to be triggered by seat rail movement, which is novel if perhaps extreme.
Have to say I agree with this. If you have a car like this you have just got to take precautions which means you can't leave the car on the drive during he day and just parking it in the garage at night....it's got to be kept in the garage at all times unless you live somewhere where the car cannot be seen from the road. You also have to make sure you're never followed home.

I don't really understand how if you have good security they can break in steal the keys whilst someone is asleep. Surely the alarm system should be triggered by the break in ? I'd also have a dog as we do....anyone comes anywhere near our gate and he's barking like mad. It's a pain in the arse but in London it's worth it.

We live in London and have on street parking....the good thing about that is that it's not clear which car belongs to which house so the scumbags aren't going to break into several properties looking for the keys. Flip side of that is that it's to steal the car in other ways or wheels etc which I know to my cost.
Completely agree about the security. These people aren't sophisticated enough to disable a professional monitored alarm system, the cost of which is probably well under a grand to install and then £30 a month. That, coupled with good security on doors and windows will deter most thieves, or at least mean you will be woken by an attempted theft and can hit a panic button before they get to you. Or you can just do nothing and leave the keys on the kitchen table. Pays your money and takes your choice I suppose, but there's plenty you can do to make it very difficult for thieves, without compromising your lifestyle or your wallet.

+1 re monitored alarm systems.

I had one with a panic button and accidentally hit it a couple of times (Keys close together on keypad, cycling gloves... rolleyes )

On both occasions I had a Police car on the doorstep within 3 minutes.

Thanks. Let's hope they've got the right buggers. Maybe they'll sing at some stage too.

IMO if someone took my car, ragged it silly then crashed/damaged it then they would be welcome to it.

I certainly wouldn't want it back.
