2008 Mercedes CL63 with over 110k miles
Discussion
A friend is looking to trade up from their relatively low mileage 2003 CL500 and has just sent me this link bouncing up and down with excitement as a possible purchase.

My reaction is to tell them to run far away from the potentially ruinous expenses that a high mileage high performance car will bring but I thought I would put it out to the PH collective for opinion. Worth nothing that their previous car was kept for over 8 years so this won't be a short term ownership prospect.
To buy or not to buy.

@jamoor It's still bloody overpriced here too - problem is there's only CL500's to benchmark against.
@GG89 He can afford the costs but the current pampered low mileage CL500 has cost nearly 10k in repairs this year due to air suspension etc. My fear is that this car in 5-6 years with 150k on the clock will be a basket case.
@wiliferus Best response yet, I fell over laughing and sent this link to my friend!

I was in a Vectra taxi last month with 345,000 miles, in the UK.
A high mileage car is all about how the miles were driven, how it was maintained, and so on. If the car has done 100k over 15 years through summer and winter and with 12 different owners, their families and dogs, then that is obviously a lot worse than a car that has done 100k popping across Europe over 3 years with no corners cut on maintenance and a caring owner.
To think this will break *just* because of the mileage is bonkers. Worry about being unable to sell it maybe!

It depends on how that price compares to other examples on the market. That is incredibly expensive compared to UK prices - I can only assume that it's relatively cheap compared to other models on the market in Ireland.
Also, it could very easily be 110,000 gentle motorway miles. But that's also no guarantee of longevity.

Just an update of sorts.
I recently visited this friend and he lent me the car to try out. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with it, the previous fastest car I'd driven was an B7 RS4. The engine is the star of the show but you pay the price when you take it to the pumps - I got low teens although admittedly I was making the most of the sound.
The real reason I came back to update this thread was how impressed I was with the condition of the car. It seems with these latest generation of mercs if properly looked after (1 owner) they can look box fresh even after 5 years and 110k. Wait for another few years of depreciation and I'll be back to the classifieds to check these out again
