Quite fancied a Golf Gti, best of all worlds and all that, but I just can't justify the price, especially with the A45 etc around. I think VW have managed to really convince themselves that they're in the same league as BMW Merc and Audi in the publics perception and priced themselves accordingly. Shame really...
I don't get it, you can walk into VW and drive away a standard 3 door GTI for £23k. For me that represents great value for money. In comparison (not that I think it's one worth making), an AMG A45 lists at £38k. I've no idea if discounts are possible but even if they do the difference will be enormous.

I also agree, its a shame the Mk7 'real world' economy isn't any better than that of the Mk5 GTI, as the Mk7 paper figures are improved. This is why I've now got a Mk6 2.0 TDI frown

The GTIs are otherwise the ultimate all rounder, still the hot hatchback to beat!
I agree!! The figures quoted should be much closer to reality - an industry wide problem, especially for petrol cars (less so for diesel in my experience). When I really press-on in my e46 BMW 330d economy genuinely only falls from 45mpg to 40mpg, as opposed to 40mpg to below 20mpg in the GTi. Also the speedo is accurate in the BMW but up to 7mph over-reading on the Golf. The dealership said this is typical for all cars but there is no acceptable reason for this nowadays. I thought I was not really going that quickly at times and it seems I wasn't!!! Maybe they want people to 'think' they are faster in their GTi?
