I'm the guy that has had EVERYTHING go wrong with an R230. Pre-2005 I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. I wouldn't have one given to me.

See that guy over there - the tall dark haired one. That's me. I'm not looking at you driving past in your SL and thinking "that's cool". No. I'm pitying you.

I can't even be arsed going into it anymore. They're a total and utter sack of st. Badly designed. Badly put together. Awful. If Merc had an ounce of pride in their product they'd buy them all back and scrap them to keep them off the market. These will be getting into shed 4K territory sometime soon - then we'll see them being frantically sold back and forth when the new owner realises what needs fixing and how much.

ps. they're st.
I will strike it off my " will have one day soon" list frown
I would, the 230 was a disappointment which is a pity as I think if they had applied the previous engineering standards, then it would have been a great car.

But they didn't and it wasn't.

I had a 129 SL500 for quite a few years and after a fair bit of expenditure to correct faults present (but no really apparent) at purchase, it was reliable, fast, comfortable and fairly practical. I sold it because I was utterly broke and needed cash... fast! I would have kept it forever otherwise. Well built, totally rust free and quick enough to make me smile.

Now that my situation has improved (financially) I considered a 230 - I really like the look of them, very pretty cars, but I just couldn't face the bills that were DEFINITELY going to appear. Looked at 129s again, but I want my old one back, I knew that car and don't want any other with faults as Mercedes charge like wounded Rhinos!

Gave up and bought a giffer spec Honda!

I will have another 129 at some point, they are addictive and in my view, special.

As for the headlights, I removed mine by taking out the grill (10 mins.) loosening off the wing bolts (3 or 4 from memory)to allow the top of the wing to move out an inch which allows you to remove the whole headlight unit, about half an hour in and out.

The older and poorer I get the more cunning I become wink.
That is good advice right there, would have saved loads of pissing about

They're not bad cars. Any Merc of that era appears to be a gamble - if you get a lemon, you're screwed.

I have had mine for 3 months and yes, it has cost me - but only really in upgrades and a couple of things that I failed to notice on the test drive (my own fault).

The car seems well put together, drives well, is bloody fast and makes an awesome noise (I have had mine modded). I can honestly say, and I don't know whether this is just the fact that the novelty hasn't worn off yet, but I would take the SL55 over the 911 on most dry days.

Don't listen to the horror stories - your ownership experience won't be like theirs unless you get unlucky and buy a total lemon of a car.
