For some reason Romans would't budge on price at all so sadly that ones out the window. Looking at this now, they are just seeing what they can do on p/x etc. Any thoughts?:

It has distronic which seems to be quite a rare option and one well worth having IMO. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...
Carefully check the history for any suspension work and the ABC pump being replaced. Check the boot for wetness (they all seem to suffer from this to an extent, easy to fix but often not)

Cheers Ben, Do I want one that has had suspension work done or not? When should the ABC pump have been replaced? Yeah have heard about the wet boot issue Carefully check the history for any suspension work and the ABC pump being replaced. I bought a 16000 mile SL55 from a Merc dealer with a full warranty . Having had a couple of Corvettes I felt like a change. What a mistake !
It turned out to be the most unreliable car I have ever owned, When it was running well it was a great car but I got to the stage if I wanted to be sure I was going to complete a journey I took my Fiesta.
It was under warranty but all of the trips too and from the Merc Dealer spoiled any enjoyment I got from the car,
I am back in a Corvette. Big lump no fancy superchargers or air suspension etc.

My point is, if you buy an SL55 , BUY THE WARRANTY.
One of the most valuable posts in this thread.I had a 2003 E55 AMG back in 2006/2007 and it spent an awful lot of time back at the dealer - I'm very glad I got a dealer car with full warranty.
A good friend of mine has a 2003 SL55 which has done 75k, which I drove.
It felt tight as a drum and was a complete hoot to drive. BUT
It has had to have new inner rear wings as they rust, and the boot got wet as a result.
The exhaust mounting brackets rusted and it had to have a new exhaust.
BUY WITH CAUTION.

As much as there are happy owners, I think there are enough horror stories here to illustrate just how careful you should be when buying this car.
A good one - you will not find a (IMO) better car for the money, speed, sound, looks, feeling.
A bad one - can ruin even a fairly wealthy person!

I have the Tier1 MB ( no excess ) extended warranty which cost me £1550 to renew last year. The way I see it is that anything that fails on the car is replaced / repaired by MB. The £20,000 of warranty work done since I bought the car in June 2011 cost me £2700 in warranty premium, so I got good value for money.
I recently had new rear tyres (Michelin PS3 MO1 101y) supplied and fitted for £366. I ordered them online from Asda Tyres and they were fitted by Iverson Tyres in London W4.
All discs and pads were replaced last month by MB Guildford at a cost of £695(inc VAT).
Lepsons refurbished the wheels ( diamond cut ) and did a fantastic job.
The SL55 is not cheap to run and you MUST keep on top of maintenance / repairs.

They say M-cars are expensive to run.... wait till you run an AMG as a daily driver.... they aren't cheap (and I'm not even factoring in the fuel).I recently had new rear tyres (Michelin PS3 MO1 101y) supplied and fitted for £366. But in my opinion, the noise and occasion of driving a big engined AMG is somewhat more special than a highly tuned, revvy M-car.
Buy the right SL55 and you will not regret it!
I investigated a few cars recently for my next purchase.
One car I liked the look of was a c63 and checked out the folder. It's then I realised the brakes on those are 1.3k!
Tyres every 6-8k by the looks of it! And it did a lovely 11mpg on the test drive. It didn't put me off, the xfr did that. I would still buy one but it was a pricey motor even by m car and xfr standards. The service bills were in the region 400-550.
If possible I'd still own one in thr future but go in with your eyes open with older amg's

Go for it!!
I bought one a couple years back and could feel my testicles growing in size!
Do it while you still can, 10 years from now it will be very difficult for normal folk to drive around in(as opposed to keeping in a garage) a big thirsty AMG.
I had an E55 AMG a few years back and loved the power delivery. I always promised myself an SL55 with supercharger and exhaust upgrades I bought one a couple years back and could feel my testicles growing in size!
