I'm pretty sure my grandparents used to have one of these that they took my Dad and his siblings on holiday in. From what I've heard it was unbelievably slow, incredibly noisy and pretty cramped.....much like most caravans :P

The minimum power output of the 5.9-litre Cummins 6BT turbodiesel engine should be 130bhp. The standard N/A non turbo model was rated at 115bhp. Other turbo model variants went up to around 170bhp, depending on the fuel pump fitted.

Anyway, this vehicle is good for a romp anywhere you can vehicle, lol.

You could buy that, or you could buy my mates camper converted Ural instead, which lets face it beats it in most respects even if a little rough around the edges....

Its never about horsepower with a commercial engine. Ive driven a Volvo with only 180bhp, which weighed six tonnes, but could carry twice that on its back.

Id be concerned about the incredibly high cost of maintenance (not just inspections, but the regular replacements and repairs) and the even higher cost of fuel.

When youre running a working vehicle which is making £300-£400 a day then 6mpg can be tolerated, but when youre off on a jaunt then itll spoil your holiday by the first fill-up!

Nicely parked. That'll do, whose going to argue.

I can imagine you'd make friends really quickly when you turn up at a campsite with one of these.

Used to be in the Army. These things are horrible to drive on the road and nearly stop going up hills and they are nowhere near as good off-road as you would like to imagine. A few times we ended up towing these out of the rough(read wet grass) with the older Bedfords.

I know a chap who made something similar from an iveco truck which had been a reliance security wagon for ferrying around prisoners. Turned out really well in the end, the back was ideal once the cells had been ripped out. One way glass was a bonus too!

Im guessing that it has been re-plated, because it would certainly have grossed at more than 7.5 tonnes originally - I will guess 12 tonnes.

Benbay001, weren't you, or are you, looking for something like this?
I certainly was. And still am.

For those who havnt seen the thread i posted, the general idea was to buy one of these and bolt a caravan straight to the chassis.

I work at outdoor events all year around, agricultural shows if you like. When it rains every man and their dog gets stuck and requires towing out.
I am of the opinion that with one of these, that wont be nessesary. laugh
They are also cheap, British and you can be reasonably confident they have been maintained to a good standard by the British army.

Here is a badly done Google sketchup of what it is supposed to look like.

I calculated the price would be about £15000. £7500 for lorry. £5000 for skanky caravan. £2500 for parts and unforseen circumstances.

And here is the initial thread.

Sharp tyres and diff locks (and cross locks) will be the answer. I doubt that the chassis is too stiff (an actual problem with some Scania 4x6 and 4x8 dual purpose vehicles) to hinder them.

The trick is to only ever use the locks to get out of trouble and never to get somewhere...
