RE: Personalised plates: Tell Me I'm Wrong
Discussion
Totally in the middle of the road on this. Sometimes I think they can be good, others not. A friend of mine has an old plate that's really pretty unusual, and I think that works well, but the 'D14ANE' type ones are pretty awful...and usually found on a Megane CC.
Did quite like the idea of VW60LFR which appeared a while back. Although that would require owning a VW Golf R which is another issue altogether.

I had one that states the model of the car - much like the GTR in your artical. For me it just completes the whole thing. Yes, it's obvious what the car is, so why repeat it...for me it just finishes off the look.
Instead of having random jumbled letters and numbers, it actually says something. Some of them make people laugh, others make you look like a tool - but it's a personal thing.
It's no different to why folks get their named engraved into things like iPods, iPads and Watches - it somehow turns it from "just an object" into "it's mine"; and why wouldn't you want to put your mark on something you are proud of?
Edit: I dislike people that illegally bodge it to try and read like something else; it looks tacky. But if you can get a decent one most understand then fair play.

Personally I just feel it's another way of personalising a car. No different to aftermarket wheels or unusual choice of paint job.
I put a suffix plate on my daily driver that came from my MGB. It has no significance whatsoever bar perhaps my inside leg measurement, I just think it looks nice.
I'm also quite happy to put an OJ plate on my Defender as anyone who knows me will know that, without trying to sound pretentious, the car is part of my history and identity and it suits it. It came from the factory with a bright blue two tone paint job, stainless steel everything and stripes on the side. There isn't one like it in the UK (although to be fair there are up to 50 identical ones in South Africa!) and it's so identifiable as me that a normal plate looks bland.

Having 4 of them, I really don't mind - but it's each to their own. Personally I find the Focus RS in green a much more significant indicator that the person behind the wheel is a wker, but that is only my opinion - and this is only Chris' opinion. It's a taste thing.
Where I live, 'non-standard issue' plates are incredibly common, so not annoying in the slightest. What annoys me is when people use a silly font.

Not a fan of D14ANE type plates, with itallic fonts etc, but I personally think a plate with fewer digits than the standard seven looks neater and less cluttered to me. Each to their own though - I can't see why it would or should bother you tbh?
i totally agree. i think they look wkYi Like plates. cant belive some idiots even use theres as thier Pistonheads username....oh hang on...

For tedious Smugs who worry about not getting enough attention.
im sorry i had to check out your garage....we all drive these cars because we secretly love that attention. we think we look cool. everyone over the age of 10 actually looks at us and think we're idiots....
(and yes i include myself in the above !)
I think the vehicle is key to how a plate looks.
Single letter and number on a Veyron? Awesome.
Standard plate on an F1? Awesome.
"Funny" on business - I like (for example, timber and damp specialist around here has all their vans A1 ROT, A2 ROT etc.). There's also an Autoglym van with the fantastic plate "WAX 1T".
Kit cars also reflect plates well I think (mainly because they're so indistinguishable anyway!).
The conclusion to my post is that I've no tangible reason for any of these opinions at all

The problem with personalised numberplates for me is that there's always something better to spend the money on even I'd rather have another £1000 car than an equivalent numberplate, also I feel that if you were to be driving your sporty car as it was designed to be used the numberplate would make it easier for people to remember you details and report you etc.
