all very good stuff until the mini rant about clothes, shoes etc. if you can appreciate why someone would want a private plate for appearance purposes then surely you can understand why someone would want some nice shoes or a suit for the same purpose?
Yes I can, nothing wrong with QUALITY but why the need to hang labels everywhere? That is vanity at it's very worst.

Not always quality either, you pay solely for the name. Take Superdry T-shirts that look like rags and cost £25.

The fact is you can buy quality clothing without the "look at me" labels which is why many people buy them in the first place.

Quiet and subtle quality is actually far more impressive because it's that obvious.

All I'm saying is that £499 for a plate is not a great deal. If people want to spend £10k on a Rolex then that's fine too, if bought for the right reasons. I have a Seiko watch which is fairly battered as I never take it off but as long as it still works, I'll keep it.

Agree for many that try too hard.
Mine is my user name and is merely a good-looking tidy embellishment to my pride and joy that a boggo plate would spoil.
In reality, it's an appearance item that goes into the same category as:
alloy wheels that weigh the same as steels
wider low profile tyres that nobody comes near the limits of
front air dams that serve little purpose
rear spoilers that have no effect
front foglights nobody needs
stripes that serve no purpose
rolled exhaust tips
painted bumpers...I mean, come on!

They are all appearance items that we are all guilty of spending money on and which we are free to spend our money on.

I have zero designer clothing, watches, shoes etc,(WTF is all that about) and I drive Fords, albeit nice Fords. I shop in Lidl, don't waste money on newspapers of expensive coffee or expensive suits but I like my plate, for me, for my car, for nobody else.

...and isn't a "V" pretending to be a "U" trying a bit too hard as you say ;-)

I don't mind the funny ones. I saw AR51 COW on a fairly new car not so long back.

It was driven by a middle-aged woman and the plate wasn't messed about with in any way.

Now that made me chuckle.

I wouldnt agree...generally I find private plates are not about telling people that your name is Kev or that the car is a 911, its about adding some individuality to a piece of equipment that has been replicated thousands of times over. It is the one part of a car you can truly individualise, surely thats the point and one that is glaringly ignored (or one that is blatently unaware of) in the article? I can put something individual on my car (and tasteful in a lot of cases which are often ignored also) that no one else can have, so why not, you lot can all blend into the background with your XX05 XXX number plate that no one would bat an eyelid at.

As cmoose mentions, theres nothing 'private' about these plates.
Bell end plates for bell ends trying to give it the 'look at me ive got a bell end plate'. Or others trying in vain to make their POS look newer than what it is..even though its the 'old' model...bell ends with nothing more of importance in their lives..

Yes, exactly the same right down to the last detail where not everyone is forced to have a tattoo unlike being required to display a registration.

Other than that you're bang on the money, as usual.

There's no flies on you, is there?

Btw, the thread is about personalised plates as there's no such thing a 'private' plate.

Why a 'guilty' pleasure. What is the harm in pleasure by itself? Why make an association between pleasure and guilt. Were you bought up Catholic?

Saw a standard M3 at the 'ring last week with 'CSL' in the number plate.

Huge sin.

If I could find it, I might buy 'T13VOM' for a laugh...
