RE: Ferrari 599 GTB: PH Fleet

In answer to Harris' point about the awfulness of SMGs... we've seen the Vanquish stick conversion and a LOT of them have been thus treated - AM clearly admits that the SMG was a failure. How long until if not Ferrari themselves then some independent specialist offers a stick conversion for the SMGs in these?
My son maintains that one day he's going to have a Lamborghini Murcielago SV. Manual 'box conversion from a lesser Murcielago and all the gubbins sending power to the front in a skip, thus handily saving a fair bit of weight. I don't know what he's on about, I haven't desired one of Ferrucio's motors since the Islero.

My Grandad owned an Islero, my dad who drove and enjoyed it, still rates it as his favorite Lamborghini. Unfortunately it was sold some years before I was born, I just saw some pics. I am not a great fan of most recent cars, Ferruccio died 20 years ago and here in Italy the Lamborghini have become so rare, mostly exported, VW saved it but made it colder, and much less loved than Ferrari, a shame. My son maintains that one day he's going to have a Lamborghini Murcielago SV. Have followed in Chris Harris's wheeltracks and bought a 599 GTB with HGTE Wheels and Exhaust. What a noise!! Crap gearbox though unless you finesse the change on moderate throttle openings. Otherwise it is riot with all the taps open. 1500 miles and now the first trip to the dealer with strange readings from the panel and an electronic water temp needle that just disappeared from the dial completely. Oh and the heating failed too.
However - I tried the 991 Turbo S the other day and although this is a far more suitable supercar for the UK, I have to say that I am still in love with the Fiorano. The Ferrari begs to be driven well whereas the Porsche plays the "Minder" with aplomb. The 599 has a great chassis set up too allowing a fair bit of slip in Sport mode before the TC says "enough". Its a bit mad in greasy conditions though and a stealthy driving style pays off.

I re-read this article recently.. and Chris if you think your man-maths went wrong.. you should have a look at mine with a 991 Carrera S. Bought the car USED in Sep 2012, heavily specced car with 2k miles on the clock, bought for 77k. Sold it 12 months later with 8k miles on the clock for 65k Porsche Dealer bid whilst putting an order in for a 991 GT3.
Yes that's 12k depreciation in 12months and 8k miles on a motor bought used and which is supposed to keep its value well. I was really taken to the cleaners, my worst depreciation experience ever. True if I had kept the car I would not have had to spend the additional money you refer in article but still the depreciation alone would have covered probably 2yrs of motoring in a 599.
I have only myself to blame, I was offered at the time a 997.2 GT3 with sensible miles and superb spec and I suspect that given current issues with GT3 + manual nostalgia.. that car would have costed... 0 in depreciation. You can live to learn from your mistakes..

Sounds reasonable? Lose 15% off a virtually new premium car in a year? I don't think £6k a year is going to run a 599 somehow!Yes that's 12k depreciation in 12months and 8k miles on a motor bought used and which is supposed to keep its value well. I was going to say, I understood Ferrari developed the 458 as DCT only. If you want a manual supercar, there may still be some new Gallardos around with manuals, but I think the Huracan is paddles only - and I presume the R8's replacement will also be DSG only (thank God they still offer it with a manual at the moment). Oh, and there's always the Noble M600...
