Turns out it's a Cat C. Still thinking about it though
This might be a better bet and should be easily haggled into thread budget. Only a 180, but fine for general shedding about.

I'm tooling around in a 2002 C5 HDi at the moment. Very comfortable old thing, and everything works as intended! Didn't pay £500 for it though!

Looks nice, although the smaller Merc 4 pots are a bit agricultural in terms of sound.

Now Garlick's off, do we get to we our own stuff on here yet hehe

Not technically for sale until MoTed on Thursday, but it will fly through again. Scraped rear bumper so will be inside budget. Late 2000 DHP.

I had a hatchback c5 before so looking forwards to the magic carpet ride again.

I guess my main areas of concern are suspension, clutch, turbo and dpf , although saying that it's done 200k so guessing it's been hammered up and down the motorway that will help with the dpf.

Saying that the advert states it's in good condition so if anything's seriously wrong i'll just turn around and get back on the train, but i hope it's ok.

Not exciting in the slightest but surely bombproof motoring at £200 + the cost of a water pump! (it is still for sale despite saying sold - see further down)

Almost tempted to buy it just as a spare car given the recent departure of my Kia and the fact my AX is in bits so I'm relying on the shonky Audi hehe

My parents had one of them for us kids to learn on. Utterly utterly unkillable. Well, until my youngest brother put it sideways into a tree. Very tempted to snaffle it and park it on the drive until my oldest (now 11) is ready to learn. Slow, big, heavy, predictable, perfect for new drivers.

Price says £695 but ad says £999 no offers! It's a big lump of car either way. It would be worth spending £695 just for the experience, even if the first failure may mean you sell it on.

I didnt spot that frown I HATE sellers that do that!

Still, at £999 it qualifies for the thread and like you say, is still good value.

The ad tomfoolery would put me right off though.
Don't even understand why they've done it in this case - I thought it was usually to get around the jump in advert price over £1000

Anyone got a bag full of brave pills?

S500 with 260k miles for <£700!

Actually quite tempted. My mates are getting married on a shoestring in six weeks - what better way to ferry them to the Church... except if it breaks down on the way.

Even for £995, I doubt that will last the day!

(Someone will now come on and say it's been for sale for weeks! hehe )

Unless they original advertised it at £999 and had no takers, and have reduced to £695 without editing the ad. Begs the question why it didn't sell at £999 though!

Also, a search on Google for the mobile number brought up this Gumtree advert: http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/merc...

The interesting thing is that the advert states £700, but the URL contains the words 'only 1800 or very close offers'

Looks like he's been reducing it for weeks with no takers. This could be a genuine bargain.

edit: and another ad stating £1800 http://www.vehigle.co.uk/used-car/2002-Mercedes-Be...

Strange that it had done 30k fewer miles 2 weeks ago.

Right made the trip to swindon to pick up the £500 citroen c5.

Drove back to somerset fine although the clutch is pretty fked, very high biting point but not slipping there's no radio, the plastic drivers side indicator bulb cover is missing and there's a plastic bit of cabin trim missing by the wing mirror adjusters.

No service history although the chap says his friend changed the cam belt at 160k which is just before he purchased the car of his friend.

Advisories in mot are 2 tyres near legal limit and that's it.

So do i shed it and not do the clutch/cambelt or spend a bit more?

I can get the parts and get our tractor mechanic to fit them at cheap rates.

Oh and lastly the guy worked in a garage and the car was there stter used for odd jobs it stinks of lynx and dirty engines.

Begs the question if the garage considered it low and now they want rid of it...?
