The thirsty V6 has got to go so that's going on the Bay at the weekend.

I want to replace it with a diesel Audi within thread budget. Preferably I want a 110 with the AFN lump which from a reliability aspect is simply superb. I don't mind either A4 or A6 and Avant flavour would be a bonus. A long Mot (8 months +), and as in this budget they're generally quite leggy, some history of a cam belt within intervals would be nice.

I've trawled Autotrader, eBay and obviously PH, with limited success. Am I expecting too much? I'm quite happy to deal with a grotty interior that needs a good scrub, and exterior wise and long as there's no actual damage, I can cope with wear and tear. There's bugger all out there.
The best contender has no Mot, and the trader kindly offers in the ad to put 12 months on it for £100!!! I'm a lot of things but I'm not a mug!

So, Bargain beards, go fetch! Oh, and somewhere south of Birmingham preferably as I'm in Reading!
They are out there, I spotted this last week but didn't post on this thread as I was going to buy it! AFN 110hp tdi, one owner, 110k, full history, climate control, new tyres, no dents, no rust, everything works, it does 50mpg at 75mph and will happily run on veg oil, bargain!

All it needed wash a good wash and polish, which it has now had and sits quite happily on my drive biggrin

This is my 2nd Bargain Basement purchase over the past 2 years.
One weekend and 842 miles later I am the owner of my 1st Barge , Volvo V70 2.5T Auto for £1000 with 11 months MOT and 5 months Tax . smile

That's a really nice shed. I viewed a 2.5T a few weeks ago and was very impressed by how nicely it drove and the solid feel. The one I looked at was just a bit too uncared for though with quite a few niggles - both rear doors made horrible noises when opening etc (apparently the welds failing).

Would look after that one myself.

Top spot! Looks very nice! Within thread budget?
I'll just have to keep looking and move fast when a good one pops up. Mildly temped by the 2.5tdi too but the thought of a cam belt change on a car in this budget makes it stupidly pointless really! £500+ job I'm told...

The thinking man's 205? Tempting, long MOT and just up the road from me! But how many old cars do I really need?

It was £300 under thread budget, re the 2.5 I'd not bother with a belt change at this price point, just run it till it breaks, if it even does, there was a 1.8 petrol A4 similar to mine for sale locally, they are not a bad engine, I used to be able to get 38mpg out of my Golf with the same motor, but suffer from coil pack and sensor issues.

Poverty spec non pas French crap, they are not completely without merit but there are far better cars around for the money.

After a cheapy 4x4 for a bit of casual green laning and for when winter arrives.

I used to have a Suzuki Samurai, which was great fun – but would prefer a meatier diesel this time around...

Does anyone have suggestions for the most reliable/best value vehicle to start looking for? Much as I love old range rovers, I think I would be sensible to go for something Japanese from the reliability point of view!

Ford Maverick/Nissan Terrano would be a good shout, the old Frontera's are very capable off road but not brilliant on road.

cheap bulletprroof motoring. I would have had this off of you if the engine was smaller and I can't even drive yet.

I'd love a 309 GTi 16V, 160BHP engine from the BX/406. Never sold here and always command stiff money in France.

Sorry for the late reply ..Thanks everyone for the comments on the Volvo smile She is a lovely comfy car. And for the record it is on tiny 15's laugh
The trouble is now the temptation to spend money on it to make it even better, ( shocks are a bit saggy ) and preventing problems .. I dived in at the deep end and did my 1st ever gearbox fluid change (£20 for the Dextron3 fluid ) as my 1st ever home DIY servicing and we'll chuffed! biggrin and annoyingly discovered it needs 2 tyres due to uneven wear/ bad alignment so that's next week. Very happy with it tho'.. amazing value for such a lot of car.

Had a 309 back in the mid 90s. Was skint at the time and it wasn't exactly in brilliant condition, but was still shocked when 6 months after I bought it, the gearbox fell off the bottom of the car.

That sort of thing puts you off French cars for life. Lol.

Just walked past a car that's gone up for sale on the walk back from the station

1997 Jag XJ executive, deep red, cream leather, 98k miles and 12 months MOT...

Couldn't see any rust as I was passing - £550...

Makes me wonder why I spent 5x that keeping my 540i mechanically perfect, over the past 8 weeks!

not sure if this is worth the money or not.

I much prefer these older ones. Very demure in comparison

I'd say it *could* be worth it, looks tidy enough and doesn't sound too bad, it would need a careful once over but I'd be tempted after a haggle.

If it doesn't run you could always use it as a skip.
