Best of the Bargain Basement Vol. 2
Discussion
Back from my jaunt to rural Cumbria to pick up the £300 Puma!
Good points:
- The throttle response and handling are wonderful
- It's clean inside and everything works as it should (or did... see below)
- The engine is spot on - no smoking, no rattling, nothing
- Full service history - it's clearly been looked after by someone at some point
- Full MOT history as well - no advisories on the last one
Bad points:
- The battery is dead so it needed a jump start
- The mate who drove there didn't know which terminal was which, so put the positive on the negative... which blew the fuse that covers the aircon, heater, interior lights and stereo
- It has a lot of spiderwebs on it
- The ABS and traction control warning lights are on (but the brakes feel okay enough)
Overall, pretty happy.
As an added bonus it came with this attached:

£520 notes. Outstanding VFM - except the new owner will part with that and then some over the next year to keep it going a) bid up by mate who was never outbid by a genuine buyer
b) bid on by a drunk bloke who realised, when sober, he didn't want it
c) an absolute nail hiding something big and bad so buyer didn't complete when they saw it
d) ?
Good work on the jag cold snail. keep us updated please
Nice puma in manchester for £450 with tax and test.

A few more photos of the Jag.
As you can see, it's not 100% in the bodywork (there's a few scratches on the bonnet and some odd marks on the roof) and the headlining is a bit saggy, but mechanically it appears to be fine (at the time of writing).
I'll hook up the air-con belt next weekend and see what happens.

Well had a bit of a spending spree this weekend! Bought two bargain basement cars. A Toyota Celica 190 and a Peugeot 206 1.4 hdi. Both cars on 110000 miles with some history. All seems good so far but the 206 needs a new clutch soon which will put us just over the 2k mark. I'll get some pictures up when I can.
Right - once my 944 has sold I will be looking for a runabout/shed so I can sort a few bits on my Turbo, and use for general camping/dump/winter duties.
So, I'll be looking for something with a bit of space, nice spec, fairly reliable (i like spannering, but don't need another project!), estate or a hatch/saloon that has folding seats. Prefer something with a bit of a go or nice engine note - mpg not too much of a worry.
My shortlist so far...
MG 75 ZT-T 190
Saab 9-5 Aero
850/V70 T5
Honda Accord estate maybe (don't know much about them)
Jag X-Type estate (too ropey at this money?)
I've had two 850's before (T5 then an R), so I know what they're about, but they seem a bit more expensive all around than the equivalent Saab - plus I've fancied a Saab for a while.
Quite taken by the MG as well. Ordinary a Rover/MG would not be my kind of thing, but they seem like cracking value.
Anything I've missed or should add to my list??

On my usual Rover hunt - I don't need another so here is one for your perusal!
Rover 75 Classic SE, 2.0 v6 Auto:

What's the rest of the bodywork like rust wise? That A Pillar rot looks pretty intensive. As you can see, it's not 100% in the bodywork (there's a few scratches on the bonnet and some odd marks on the roof) and the headlining is a bit saggy, but mechanically it appears to be fine (at the time of writing).

How soon do you need it? I may well have a 9-5 aero on 55 plate going for way less than thread maximum. There's a few tiny bubbles on one of the rear arches and it has been welded up underneath at some point, but the bits around the windscreen look worse in the photos as the area has been treated, but not painted. It'll be a bit of fun for 12 months and if the next MOT proves too much a challenge, I'm sure the engine and wheels are worth something.

I'll send you a PM when I'm at a computer and not using this bloody obstructive 'smart' phone! So the wife and I took a train trip to London to look at and hopefully buy a lovely green Volvo V70. After traipsing through the p**sing down rain to the garage, we're informed he sold it 10 mins previously despite me telling him I was en route to him. However, he did have a dark blue V70. We took it to for a drink before and had a look round it. He wanted a bag of sand but managed to get him down to 700 notes. Heated cow, cruise, climate AND sunroof. Loving it so far after a 130 mile drive back to Lincolnshire.
