Manual, not a fan of autos.

not too many issues then, how much would I be looking at for a good condition 2003-2006 Hot aero estate?
There are a lot more autos available than manuals. The auto suits the car well and is smooth. I wouldn't rule it out. It also has flappy paddle buttons after my2003 if you want to go manual, but I rarely bother. I would recommend a stage 1 remap by Noobtune, which makes an already fast car very fast indeed in a straight line. I get 36mpg on a motorway run in my auto and 22mpg around town. Get yourself over to uksaabs forum for everything you want to know. It's really good with lots of helpful, knowledgeable members. My2004 and newer solved the sludging problem btw. You are looking at anywhere between £1k to £2.5k for the range you mentioned. Buy on condition and history not age. Aero's totally rock for the money. I love mine.

Brilliant, thanks.

How hard is it to fit a aftermarket head unit? the original one looks pretty integrated...

Why do you want to change the head unit? I had a 9-5 aero with the HK factory upgrade to the stereo. I wouldn't have wanted to mess with it. It didn't have an Aux in but the tape player was so good a Phillips casette iPod connector thingy from ebay sorted that problem.

Other 9-5 aero issues are the DIC which is about £300 to fix. Sludging (fixed post 04) and CPS have already been mentioned. CPS is about a £300 fix too. The pixels in the display unit can go but that's not a big deal.

They are basically very reliable and well built cars, offer great performance for the money but I could never love mine as the steering, brake and gearchange feel were too vague.

At this price point you'll do well to get 250bhp, most of the toys and great handling/feel.

id usually go for the driving experience over toys, but all depends really.

Next May when I will be looking for a new car will be just before I start my placement (or retake my exams!)
So if it requires a long commute= big comfy powerful car with toys short commute=something more fun and raw.

This caught my eye - 205GTi performance, sort of, but with 60MPG. Bulletproof Pug 1.8 turbodiesel engine.

£850 with a fresh 12 months' worth of MOT for one of these is a billy bargain, surely, even if like this one it's had a bit of a dent in its driver's side rear quarter. Nice, long, honest-sounding advert.

the thing that puts me off the STDT is the horrible dash and seats colour.

bar that, it's a winner.

That's lovely, other than the nasty crease in the offside rear. I'd happily run that as a daily driver. 80bhp from the 1.8TD if I remember rightly - quick enough to keep up with modern traffic speeds.

What's the the suspension, though? It looks weirdly jacked up.

As an aside, are you the very Ian Cress of the Cress Marketing Board?

Does look a little high at the front. Wasn't sure if it was the camera angle or not. Either way, it's in Devon and i'm not, by quite some distance, so there's no chance of me buying it.

I am indeed head of the cress marketing board. Eat cress.

My old '86 205GRD had suspension pretty much like that, until a year or so after I sold it when I came across it on the road and one side had collapsed. Brilliant car for handling though.

The front is a form of McPherson strut (I think) and the rear a torsion bar, the French auto industry used to favour soft riding cars in the main, just fashions have changed so now it looks a bit odd.

Hmmph.

My 99 Avensis is still trucking along at 140k. Bought last summer with 100k for £850. Regular home servicing at £20 a time and a new windscreen is all its cost in 18 months.

But its got really sluggish of late. Can frequently feel a bit bogged down when trying to get on. Any thoughts?

Wondered if it's a throttle position sensor... but I guess it could be coil pack or fuel filter? Plugs are 12 months old and should do 40k miles.

All help appreciated.

I definitely recommend the 9-5 aero for distance work. The seats are fabulous.

Lad I know has converted at least half-a-dozen 205 GTis to diesel in the last few years - you lose some of the balance (the engine and ancils are quite a bit heavier) but you double your MPG and have more 'lazy oomph' which makes them great little things to run.

One thing tho - no PaS+Engine weight+larger alloys = Gym needed to steer the fker ;0

Note: no worthy GTis are suffering here as they'd all chewed their engines to death anyway
