Get on ebay. List by auctions only, distance of 20 miles from your location with a max price of your budget, and see what fits roughly into your criteria. if you are prepared to take a risk on a car you haven't seen then list by ending soonest and bid on anything that takes your fancy.

For added fun do it on a mobile app, as mine misses off the condition details section. So what seems a bargain turns out to be a shed.
Generally I agree with you, but I've had some awesome adventures going miles and miles to collect cars. My 9-3 I caught a 3.5 hour train to Cardiff to go collect and drive back that day!

Can you go wrong with MOT until next year for so little? It'll even get you through spring and most of summer before you bin it if the rust is too bad!

Caught a four hour train up to Preston, waited half an hour to be picked up to be driven to Fleetwood, bought my bmw, drove back to Coventry and then drove down to Dorset in one day.... It only overheated 5 times hehe was great fun though.

I once got a train from Leeds to Brighton to go collect a cheap ebay win which had been advertised as a jdm bb1 Honda Prelude vtec with the H22 engine. Got there to find it was actually a F22 engined car so 135 bhp instead of the 197 on the H22. Jumped on the next train back home!

Exactly, you get 8 or 9 months of motoring and then most of your money back from scrapping it. Heck, you might even get it all back selling on Ebay.

The grand cherokee i got sailed thru the mot, a wet winters due so think i'll stick with the jeep.

If anyone on here buys the mx5 , in the nicest way i hope its a heap, then i won't feel so bad i didn't get it.

Would be a nice summer toy for someone with space to store over the winter (or repair the roof). Shame it's so far!
