I keep coming back to 9-3s but can't get away from them being based on the Vectra, despite the many changes they made, as Top Gear highlighted.

Y'know what, I thought the same thing. Then I sat in and drove one back to back with a similar Vectra. Completely different feeling in both cars.

I never used to like them, but spend a bit of time with one and it gets under your skin.

On my 9-5, the only obvious GM parts I could see were the auto gear lever, the mirror adjustment switch, and the rear heated seat switch. Even less/fewer parts recognisable on my current 9-3. A 9-5 is the better car though. I'd have another aero in an instant. I miss it hugely.

Anyone want a high milage S3? Cheap and cheerful, although probably ragged within a inch of its life.

A quick ebay suggests £400 for the interior alone, should be pretty risk free if you can break it for parts if it goes wrong.

S3 1.8T??

Edit: ah the oldest S3 had a 1.8 litre engine. Learn something everyday!

Just bought a '97/P Volvo V70 tdi, 'CD' spec - so lots of toys: leather, climate, heated seats, electric seat adjustment with memory, sunroof - all working. Last owner had it 12 years. 160k miles, 20 stamps in the service book.

Not much MoT left, but it's only done 3k miles since the last one so fingers-crossed, (might need a couple of tyres). Reluctant sale due to retirement - his wife's car is newer and they no longer need two.

Drove it 100 miles home and couldn't fault it; slight moan from the PAS when it's working hard, but that's about it.

All for £250.

Good buy forsure. I've had a few V70s and they're good old cars. The CD spec is certainly worth having.

Thanks, yes I've had one before - a T5 CD. They've got the most comfortable seats of any car I've driven.

Bargain. Sell it somewhere like the owners club forum when you're done and you'll get back more than you paid.

Yes indeed, with a fresh MoT and an interior valet (it's carried dogs) it must be worth at least twice what I paid.

I have a 9-3 sportwagon...had a vectra c estate prior

Saab despite being middle spec comes with way more toys as standard (dual zone climate control, factory parking sensors, leather steering wheel, speed sensitive stereo etc)

Only thing that gripes a bit is that the saab is slightly smaller internally than the vectra was...just small enough to stop stuff fitting...though bought a set of genuine saab roof bars for ~£45 secondhand

For a diesel its also incredibly refined, even more so than a vectra with the same engine..sound deadening is a lot better

One wish though...that it was easier to replace the head unit...saab for some unknown reason put some fibreoptic propreitary thing in (replace on the facelift with a standard double din...won't fit a preface though as the dash is physically different)
Good info! I'd probably want to change the headunit in any car I bought as I have a fancy double din Apple CarPlay headunit - does the facelift 93 use standard wiring?
