When I was looking, I was told:
-check for rust
-bonnet sensor can result in the alarm going off randomly, disconnecting is the simplest way
-check the pixels on the dash
-check headlights for misting
-check bushes - braking hard from 50mph should be fine, if it doesn't feel right, the bushes are worn
-and check the gearbox works like it should.

This is the <£1k thread.

However, I like the fact that the autobox has been replaced. Presumably a recon job? In any case, you know it won't conk out on the way home.

What's the value of the car in your estimation? £5k? Cos you'll have to factor in the costs to fix the alarm. Or replace the entire system. (Maybe get a decent system for £500 rather than replace BMW's own system. Might help reduce the insurance premium.)

You don’t state which model year the car is, so how can people voice opinions on value?

What history does it have?

Being a diesel, have the swirl flaps been done?

You really need to be asking questions in the BMW section.

And ¨one of the alarms goes off?¨ There’s only one that I know of...

Just compare it with other similar models on Autotrader. Does it seem a bargain or only slightly cheaper?

Since when did the bargain basement thread cover £3k BMW's with electrical faults?

Last time people tried to help you, you weren't happy with anything suggested.

Are you still expecting a brand new car for under 1K?

Try a E34 Touring 525i Auto - the last properly solid 5 series - electrics and rust are the only worried IIRC. Watch for the boot wiring. I bought mine for £1k, treated it like a skip for a couple of years and the only thing that killed it was the immobiliser going nuts after it had been parked for 6 months - it was easier to scrap it and replace it with an E34 525i Auto saloon which I paid £550 for and sold a year later for £450. Tue bargain luxury motoring.

very, very cheap. £2,500!

Id normally steer clear of T6 Volvos due to the g'box, however at this price if you >6 months and 10k miles out of it and then throw it away for nothing its still reasonable value! hehe
1) With this post and the BMW one, I'm waiting for the bargain F458 to be posted at just £80k now.
2) Scrapping a car after 6 months having paid £2500 is not the way to do it on this thread. I'd take the risk for £500, though.

Well, you obviously wouldnt scrap it for nothing, I was using that as an extreme case. The wheels and tyres are worth £500 by themselves.

£2500 for that is very, very cheap and within the spirit of the thread I think. Its about as bargain basement as an XC90 gets.
That is an absolute steal. Someone needs to get that bought today.

FWIW - I agree that it was worthwhile posting here for the bargain-hunters.

Agreed, that is ridiculous value! Unless it's ruinously broken it's worth that all day long.

What is difficult to know is whether all the intermittent warning signs are vital or not. I've a Volvo V70 with a permanent engine management light on, something to do with the throttle body readings, it doesn't effect the way the engine performs so I haven't looked into fixing it. Some of the lights on the XC90 dash might be MOT failures.

In retrospect this must have just been a childish phase, but back in the day I genuinely thought they were pretty good looking cars.
