What the PH BB view on Subaru Legacy Outback?
I bought one fairly recently for not much money. I absolutely love the quality of the ride. everybody compliments how smooth and comfortable it is. It is brilliant on single track roads.. The engine has a really nice purr and plenty of torque. It is thirsty, but then again it's a four wheel drive petrol!
My only caution would be to bare in mind subaru parts prices – often it's not possible to get cheap pattern parts, and main dealers are costly.
I had to pay £80 for a fuel filler neck immediately as mine was rusted through!

Thought I'd ask here as the Volvo section usually seems pretty quiet...
What are people's opinions on an older V40 as a general runaround/commuter? I'm bored of paying depreciation on cars, so it's bangernomics for me from now on.
I commute 65 miles round trip daily but would prefer a petrol car. I'm not really bothered about performance (my hot hatch days are over) as long as it'll happily cruise along at 70mph. I currently drive a 1.6 mk2 focus but fancy a change to something I can get the golf clubs into a bit easier.
There's certainly plenty of lowish mileage examples to be had around thread budget.

35-ish to the gallon, not quiet, handles like a drunk buffalo and unbelievably slow.
I love it, it has taken me too France and back, and covered 18,000 miles last year, and not missed a beat.
I feel like it will be there at the end of the world once all of us buggers are dead, chilling with the cockroaches watching endless re-runs of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It will never die.
Interesting link, just because...

That's exactly what I was hoping! I couldn't give a monkeys if they're slow as hell, as long as it'll shuttle me up and down an A road to work and back. I'll throw the usual consumables at it when needed and just hope the rest stands the test of time. 35-ish to the gallon, not quiet, handles like a drunk buffalo and unbelievably slow.

Subaru, this one has 215BHP but not very heavy and a remap brings them up to 250-260, a sports cat up to 270 and a lot more torque etc.not bothered about 2 doors just b road fun

I've provisionally bought it pending me shifting on the current shed. Seller is in no hurry and a top bloke so hopefully the old Saab will go quickly. Will update with shed pics when I've got it!

Not sure I'd class it as a sports car but my 9-3 aero with mods takes it to 270bhp, and I snapped that up for much less than a bag of sandnot bothered about 2 doors just b road fun

If you get one with a decent engine and a manual 'box they will all pretty much do 30's mpg, even the T4. We've had 2 T4's a ph1 auto and ph2 manual and they did 27 and 32mpg respectively with mixed driving. My dad has a 2.0t auto and that does about 27mpg mainly around town. The 2.0 n/a is a quite nice unit too, will easily average mid 30's with a manual box.
Best bet if you can find one would be a manual 2.0t (165bhp) or 2.0n/a (140?ish). Both very dependable units and the power suits the car better than the 200bhp T4.
Avoid the 1.6 (underpowered) and 1.8 GDI (prone to issues) and for shed money i'd avoid the 1.9 (Renault) diesel too. Phase 2 cars (2000? onwards) are better all round in pretty much every way, but the ph1 is still a great shed prospect.
Otherwise they're great cars. Very easy to find well equipped, looked after examples for peanuts. Reliable, comfy and cheap/easy to maintain and fix.
We bought my dads ph2 2.0t for a grand 4 years ago and hes put about 20k up to its current 130k on it since. All still works perfectly - air con, sunroof, heated seats, autobox all perfect and passes it's MOT every year. Bloody good cars!

What sort of condition is that in for under £1k?Edited by deeen on Monday 6th April 08:24
Expect another post in 2 days saying it has imploded, or one in 9 months saying how clever I am!
