Best of the Bargain Basement Vol. 2
Discussion
At lunch I looked at an R-reg VW Passat 1.8 SE Auto advertised locally - I want a snotter for a short while.
62k Miles - current 82 year old mother of the seller has owned it for 12 years.
Mechanically it seemed sorted, central locking was a bit temperamental and unfortunately she appeared to have been using the bodywork to let her know when she was too close to anything, but nothing too serious. Her son, a nice guy with a mint Mk1 MX5 who works at Jaguar Landrover wanted £325 or near offer for it.
So - tatty, but driving and running well and decent seller, so I should be buying it, but the killer is the insurance - over £700!
Ok, so I can't use my no-claims, but I'm 40 FFS.
P.S. If I can save this is there anything to worry about on these older Passats?

A lot of electrical issues, many to do with leaks. The central locking is a typical one.62k Miles - current 82 year old mother of the seller has owned it for 12 years.

R plate = approx 1998?Ok, so I can't use my no-claims, but I'm 40 FFS.
Can it go on a classic policy?
I think I was able to put my 124 estate on one from 15 years old onwards. Try Peter Best and Adrian Flux.
On these policies though they might be picky about where you keep it, stop you using it for work and impose a puny annual mileage limit so they might not suit you, but I thought I'd mention anyway.

how do we feel about something like this:

I have been holding out for a Saab 9 5 Aero Estate but am running out of MOT time on my current barge and haven't found anything of interest that isn't a million miles away.
Great cars, but that Gertronic gearbox has a horrendous reputation for expensive failure. Google it. Then find a manual. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

I tried to add the car on as a temporary addition to my main car online and computer said no! I called AXA up and they would not accept it as it's older than 15 years, but I could get a quote for any car up to 25 years and get a multi-car discount of 10%.
Great - apart from the fact that after pissing about for 10 mins they gave me a price that was £400 MORE they had quoted me through Confused.com WITHOUT any multicar discount!
How the hell does that work?
Robbing (insert choice of expletive here)!!

I was told when I bought the car that it had a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor (rear left apparently) and everything seems to point in that direction. New sensors can be bought from about 15 quid and are pretty simple to replace usually.
This kind of thing annoys me. If it's so bloody simple to fix, fix it!MajorMantra said:

Even though it's probably knackered, that's still too cheap...
