I sold an absolute stinker 728 with half the miles for over a grand.

Was nowhere near the condition of this bargain.

I probably offer him £728 for it

At lunch I looked at an R-reg VW Passat 1.8 SE Auto advertised locally - I want a snotter for a short while.

62k Miles - current 82 year old mother of the seller has owned it for 12 years.

Mechanically it seemed sorted, central locking was a bit temperamental and unfortunately she appeared to have been using the bodywork to let her know when she was too close to anything, but nothing too serious. Her son, a nice guy with a mint Mk1 MX5 who works at Jaguar Landrover wanted £325 or near offer for it.

So - tatty, but driving and running well and decent seller, so I should be buying it, but the killer is the insurance - over £700!

Ok, so I can't use my no-claims, but I'm 40 FFS.

P.S. If I can save this is there anything to worry about on these older Passats?
A lot of electrical issues, many to do with leaks. The central locking is a typical one.
Isnt a common one that the drain holes get blocked so water runs over the ECU and cooks it?
I think that that's the problem I mentioned but I couldn't remember the details.

Opinions on something like this?:
http://www.gumtree.com/p/volvo/-volvo-v70-estate/1...

Not so sure about the range of volvo engines vs power output (ideally would like a t5 but not sure if decent ones are available in budget). Am i worth waiting for something with a bit more poke (I'm coming from a v6 alfa 156 and ideally don't want to go down in straight line performance too much...)

Thanks

That is the absolute base spec 140BHP job. It'll probably run, very slowly, until the sun goes dark but I wouldn't want one. The other NASP engine had 170bhp, the 2.5 turbo was something like 200bhp and really quite nice and then the earlier 2.3 T5 had 250bhp. Finding a nice T5 was hard 4 years ago and is probably very difficult indeed now. I actually really liked the 2.5T, it is a very reasonable balance.

I have a feeling that in sensible usage you'd get very similar economy from any of the petrol engines, from the 140BHP slug to the 250BHP T5.

Well, if one of the Dragons is selling it, it must be alright!

I spent some time looking at these, and I think I've decided on an S60 turbo, I cant find the right V70 for me with what I want to spend. They seem really good cars, I read up on an amount of problems they all seem to have at some point, the throttle pot, the front suspension, the auto box flaring, the dash display going funny. A half decent early one seems to be just outside of bargain basement, so that one at £650 is probably at that price for a reason.

The 3 I saw had between 135k and 180k. One smelled particularly bad of dog, had warning lights aplenty from a flat battery and was scratched up a bit down the drivers side, advertised as mint. Another had 'easy fix' injector problems when I got there, the third was OK, but something didnt sit right with me about it. Everything checked out with the car but I couldnt comit to it.

A good one I think will be great, but they seem to be £1500 at the moment. If you're not that bothered and fancy it for a bit then I'd say go take a look, see if he really is 6 foot 8 or whatever, I dont think you'll be screaming away with the base 2.4 engine in it though

good to know, clearly I have some more reading to do on the engines in these (turns out I was looking at the 3rd gen engine table in wikipedia!)...

I would be looking at the s60's but i'm after an estate. It seems a fast estate for shed money is a more of an ask than I first thought.

Thanks for the input

Got a viewing lined up for Saturday on what could be a nice car at a decent price, I'm like a kid on Christmas eve now.

Drummerian, yeah you'll probably find non-turbo ones a bit meh.

The hunt continues in that case then, though I think I will always struggle to find an engine note that puts a smile on my face quite like my current alfa v6...

After spending a while Volvo hunting I happened across this one

which is now sitting on my drive after a trip to Warrington this morning.

2.4T engine is pretty decent, it's replacing my 4.0 V8 S Type. I'd planned to sell the Jag in June after using it for a friends wedding, then get another car, but this one intrigued me enough to keep the Jag at the back of the drive and just give this one a go anyway. Once the wedding's done then I'll eBay the S Type

Economy = not bad, mid 30s, seats are much comfier than the S Type, though not quite as big. Car has full leather, cold aircon, heated seats, the HU-803 head unit with Dolby, 115k on it and a recent enough cambelt to not need to think about it for a while. 2/3rds of Basement budget

Downsides, small clunk from nearside rear, think it might actually be the back box rather than suspension, havent had a proper look yet

What a lot of clean respectable looking metal for the money - looks a lot more expensive than it is!

Why wouldn't they just give it a fresh MOT and sell it as oppose to giving a 3 month warranty?

Not saying there is anything wrong with that, just asking the question

Warranty won't be worth the paper - I'm amazed that any warranty company will underwrite a £600 car

Not sure on this one, but someone may be local, or have the means to put it through an MOT.

IS200 for £400.

Looks rough and not really the right kind of previous owner either

To give that any chance of selling he really should be documenting what it failed its MOT for. Is it £700 of parts to get it through, or £700 at a Lexus dealer. Big difference.
