Not sure if you frequent the smoker barge 1-5 thread, but there are cars posted and lots of expertise there.

At the price point that most of them sit, if you find a car with a decent service history and a long MOT you can pretty much buy with some confidence that it'll run for a long while yet and won't cost too much.

However, you will find that you want to improve it and restore some glory to the old girl. You'll start refreshing. You'll titivate. You'll improve it.

Then, and only then, you'll be a hopeless addict. Your children will view you with disdain. Your wife will refer to the 'old shed'.

Welcome to the club! It's a slippery slope.
Be prepared if you do buy one. They get under your skin. I bought mine on a total Whim and its just brilliant and the perfect partner to my E36 Cabrio. Those days when you cant be arsed with a rag top and cant be arsed with a harsh ride and noisy exhaust. The S124 is just perfect. Big armchairs, huge boot, decent performance, great looks - imo!

Depressed to say, as soon as I've helped the GF move in a few weeks and my M3 has sold i'll be selling my 124.

Really cant decide on a price?
1990, 300TE24, cast iron sink a ship levels of history. Even the original PDI sheet!!! 214,000 miles. Has a small amount of rust on every arch - I have a spare wing for the worst bit but wrong colour.
I am in the same position-need to sell my W124 but prices are all over the place. Mine has rusty front wings too but otherwise is totally solid, 1 previous owner, massive history, 95k miles etc. Don't want to give it away as it is a fabulous car that has got completely under my skin. They really are stunning cars IMO-so comfortable and as well made as anything out there.
It's an odd market. My car got more interest than I thought it would and sold on the first weekend. I was expecting it to go tothe firs viewer since it really was a minter, but thought I might struggle to get people to believe the ad and actually come and look.

eBay loves them at th moment. I'd suggest going for no-reserve auction with lots of detail and thy'll find their buyers.

Wonder if it's because they're just a bit leftfield so aren't in demand even if they're pretty capable.
I think it's a combination of Saab going down the pan and them not really competing on interior quality and ride comfort compared to most of the German stuff too.

I keep coming back to 124s, I've got an E46 330i at the mo which I do like but I'm considering selling up and bargain barging again for a while, a new house purchase could mean an estate is useful too.

It could be the MG Rover affect with the worry that some parts are difficult to come by? During my research last night I read that a few years ago the rear screens were already in short supply - this could have been fixed thought as aftermarket suppliers step up to the mark, and I think they use a lot of Vauxhall/GM parts so that may not be a worry.

I also read that the chassis was based on the Vectra and the handling was terrible on the earlier ones, not much better on the later ones - hoppy understeer was the phrase mentioned IIRC!

Check out Honest John.

Didn't know that.

Nor that!

I'm not going to ask about Volvo. :/

I am going to put my W124 on eBay tonight but will probably do a classified ad. I understand the fees are 10% of selling price if it is sold by auction which seem very steep?

I don't pretend to understand eBay fees, but I recently classified my shed for £749, and the fees were £14.99, so not 10%.

All that jazz

Read what he wrote. £15 is the classified price. He's on about an auction.

Fees for car auctions are different. 1% of final value, subject to a minimum charge of £20 and a maximum of £35

Would look so much better after a good clean (especially the interior) and a wheel refurb. Should be good for nearly a million miles too;

Where are all the bargain estates when you want them!?

I have my eye on either a Volvo V70 or Saab 9-5 estate. Would love another old E34 525 if there were any decent ones on sale or maybe an E39 touring, but worry the E39 may be a bit (lot) borky at £1kish.

Picked mine up exactly the same way....

Although that was a genuine question. Prices are all over the place. You can pick them up for £750 or you get dealers asking 4-5-6-all the way up for £7000. All similar cars.

S124 stuff about selling and buying etc.
You might remember the one I posted up that a mate of mine was selling. He only got £550 or something for it in the end. Relatively little interest from carandcalssic, ebay classified and autotrader. Went to a guy from mbclub.co.uk I think in the end.

Excellent, many thanks for this - much appreciated! I actually spoke to someone at Ebay last night and he assured me it was 10%?!
