Best of the Bargain Basement Vol. 2
Discussion
My previous shed has been progressively getting worse and worse so I've been keeping an eye out for something to replace it with. I happened upon this 1998 523i on eBay last week and stuck in a last minute bid. I won!
So yesterday my Dad and I drove to Bristol to collect it. I had to fit a charged battery to it and pump up one of the tyres and then we were on our way. I drove it straight back to Surrey and took it for its MOT. It passed! Only two advisories which are easily sorted. Well chuffed!!!

There is something very satisfying about paying fook all for a car that works! Many people pay more than that per month for a car loan/PCP/lease.
Like you've somehow cheated by being amongst all those other cars costing many, many multiples of your own.
Great work! Looks like a fantastic buy.
Thoughts on this 190E please?

Just got an insurance quote of £150 which is great. I've just just completed an insurance check and it's showing as not insured.
So they may have replaced it and have it stored on their property, but leaves me no way of having a test drive. Maybe that's why it has a short MOT as they know it will fail and have picked something else up.
The car looks quite tidy and seems to be owned by someone well off, so has the potential to be great and I suspect it was their run around.
Is anyone close to the seller?
ETA: It's also SORN.

I couldn't live with white, but it is only 600 quid. They tend to be pretty solid things so probably worth a punt. If the possibility of imminent catastrophe worries you, make an offer subject to it being re-MOTd; that may offer piece of mind.
However, and finishing where I started, it is only 600 quid.

It's man maths. £150 scrap for my Astra. Around £300 refund on the insurance sees me at £450.
£600 for the car. £150 for insurance and the tax should be near enough the same.
It's just the hassle of arranging a legal test drive and made me ask for thoughts on here.
It was the photos and the property that made me think it would be a reasonable car. I'd have to base the car on what I see.

Such a shame about the rust issues with these old Mercs, though they'd probably be worth more if they didn't fall to pieces.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
