Boot opens from key fob = tailgate rusted to death so keyhole no longer works.

Previous SOTW is now back up for sale, as my left shoulder operation has mended, and I am to inherit the Mini D on Monday next.

its a 500 quid smoker- working bootlocks cost much more;)

jeez! moon on a stick chaps (i know I'm the same when bargain hunting!)

it'd do a turn and has to be more comfortable than a 500 quid fiesta!

Yeah that rust in one the rear wheel arch and where the sill joins is pretty awful. I'd be amazed if the rot in that car isn't widespread and terminal.

I'm going to need a new car in December as the lease on my current MINI One is expiring. I don't want to waste 6 grand on the final payment, and nor do I want another finance deal.

At the moment I'm rather drawn to the idea of a Saab - it's an itch I've had for a while and I need to scratch it. I want it, needless to say, to be within thread budget. I've seen a lot come up on this thread and there're loads on eBay and Auto Trader, both 9-3s (Cavalier-based and Vectra-based) and 9-5s.

What would be the best option for me bearing in mind I do a 65 mile round trip commute (mostly A road) five days a week? Are they easy to live with and reliable, or am I asking for trouble? Are the petrol engines reasonably economical or would I be best off with a diesel? Which is the comfiest option for my A road driving?

Thanks for any advice - it's going to be a daily hack for work for at least six months so I need to get it fairly right.

If you are looking at that sort of daily drive I would have a look at a diesel or LPG personally. I know nothing about Saab diesels but I've got a petrol '00 9-3 HOT and a LPG '00 9-5. Both are very comfy, reliable. The HOT 9-3 will run about 30MPG but has been modded, my 9-5 is an Auto with LPG so can't really comment on what standard petrol MPG would be like (hits about 20MPG on LPG so something like 25 at a guess)

Servicing is something to consider, oil and filter is 10,000 miles or six months and this HAS to be done and with the proper oil. Saab's had a bad time of engines going sludgy, anything running around now has probably had the pan dropped & cleaned with the upgraded pickup pipe but definitely something to bear in mind. £30 for the proper servicing kit from NeoBrothers, and 30 minutes of your time (the oil filter is at the bottom right near the drain plug)

I find both my Saab's they are very stateless cars, people are kind at junctions and you can park them anywhere and not really worry about it. They are fairly large, so think about fitting parking sensors if you aren't use to bigger vehicles (you can't see the front or guage the rear easily when parking).

I love the 9-5 auto for my commute, costs pennies to run on LPG, the auto is just so easy and the steering is just crazy light, decent sound system, cold air con and heated seats for the winter (miss the electic heated front screen of previous cars though). If you've got kids/dogs/bikes they are cavernous inside, especially the 9-5 estate.

Wheels tend to be 16 inch rims, so not to ruinous to replace when necessary. Never touched anything else other than tyres and servicing on either mine in over 18 months of ownership, 9-3 set me back £650 and the 9-5 was a little over £500. Buying in december is a good time IMO - no one buys cars close to Christmas (this is how i got my LPG 9-5 so cheap)

Went to look at this today as I was passing by. I didn't know if if would still be there.

Few scuffs, worn bolster/steering wheel as expected for 150000 miles.

It's up for £1500, but no history for the last few years so not sure if the timing belt/water pump has been done.

I was quite taken with it, but factor in timing belt and kit you're looking at £2000 all in and I'm sure you can find one with full Lexus history for that. Lovely way to travel though.

Thanks. I'm in no rush, as I have my main car. It's just the second car that needs replacing, so I'm waiting until something nice turns up.

I am not asking for the moon on a stick. Just saying what something should translate as and the seller should state if the rear lock makes it look like the car's got a dirty bum hole.

Mine averaged 30MPG with the cruise control set and air con running. The interiors are very comfortable for A road commuting (mine was 50 miles A roads) don't have the sludging sump problems of the older 9-5s , if I was after a new shed I'd be going to see that.

True, you can read many things into any ad- suppose the only ways to be sure are either see it or pass on itsmile

just stating I only posted it as an example of the type of ad I find that lead to the £350 one I bought a couple of weeks ago!

personally though, a rusty boot wouldnt put me off something with 10 months Mot for a weeks wages- if the car drove ok and had no obvious mechanical maladies and was structurally alright based on what I could see, then I could cope with the rust (although I know this model does love to rot!)

hope that clarifies the point I was trying to make.

cheers
