Dat mileage though! What are Mk1 TT's like for borking?
Its the quattro, so I imagine huge bills if the 4x4 goes wrong. VW engines are pretty good, and I imagine easy to replace when they die.
What happens if the 4x4 goes wrong? Does it just become RWD or something? biggrin

My last TT Mk1 one was a 225 Quattro - 80k miles FSH - I still ended up having to fit a secondhand Haldex pump and an secondhand EGR sensor and tape up some ignition loom wiring under the bonnet.

I'm no mechanic, but do what I can.

That old 1.8T VAG engine is full of sensors that can be problematic after time.

I would suggest taking a laptop, a cheap ODB cable, a copy of VAGcom or whatever it is called these days (VCDS Lite?) and scan it to see what errors get thrown up before buying.

If the seller gets arsey when you ask to do this, as a trader once did with me, I would walk away as it suggests they are worried something may come up.

Haha that's mine. Had a couple of phone calls so far offering me £300 cash today bruv... I'm still waiting for a proper enquiry on it hehe.
If the plate is really worth £650, why not take it off and put it on retention - it' so much easier to do these days and cheaper (£80) as you can do it online and the V5 should be with you in a few days with the new reg number - get the plates made up with the new V5 and flog the old reg.

If it was November rather than September I'd be making you a proper offer and coming to get it myself - I don't need a car right now but I will in a couple months. Someone is going to get a good little deal here!

Where'd you get the plate valued?
The plate was valued by NewReg although they won't buy the plates anymore, they will only sell on your behalf.

This is like an estate agent telling your house is worth a lot more than it is really worth to get your business yet end up selling it for less later on - I had some silly valuation off them a while ago for my plate.

I bet if they were buying it into stock they would quote much less.

Still, I don't understand cars advertised with private regs in this way - if the reg was really worth more than the car why would the owner not sell it when the process is so simple?

I didn't realise it was that easy these days. I've just put it on retention and revised the ad. Thanks for the advice smile

I bought a 3 series coupé a few years back, and out of curiosity, I tried one the online valuation services, who claimed the plate (of which I couldn't see any significance myself) was worth more than I'd paid for the car! (£4000).

Since it didn't cost me anything, I gave them permission to market it for me. Needless to say, I hadn't heard anything by the time I sold the car a few years down the line smile Shame because if I'd got even half the quoted value, it would probably have paid for a fair few years running costs, and I'd probably still have it today.

Err, why? One of my cars has a VAG 1.8T that has down well over 200k miles! Engine de-gunked but original turbo.

Should I be worried?!

Similar story here, the problem is you are waiting for someone with those initials (or whatever) wanting to buy that plate, I asked an online reg retailer if reducing the asking price would increase the chances of a quick sale and they said no.

Eh what? was my response too. I had a V-reg Golf 1.8t which I bought with 176K on the clock and ran it up to around 205K before I sold it. Not only did it never let me down, but it's never let the current owner (who's had it for about 3 years) down either, as I know because he's a regular in our village pub.

I've not seen a Cav on the road anywhere in about a year.
My colleague runs a 93 1.7D. Its done over 350,000 and he's just put a replacement new (old stock) engine in it.

He must spend £500 a year on welding too. For some reason he loves the thing.

Monty's Cavalier sold quick. So I've been looking for cheap cars under £500.

Although I've noticed a new LS400 for sale. I keep coming back to look at these.

Is that a MK3? It sounds a good car, typical buyer beware, small time garage, no proper website. I found it on Autotrader and done a search for them. Possibly a Lexus dealer auction car?

That's 3x your budget and £595 above this thread budget.

I don't have a budget as such. I was looking at a cheap alternative to the £450 quotes to change a clutch on a 200000 mile Astra that has other problems. It's not economical to repair as it has a few other bits that need doing for an MOT and I fancy something different.

Fair point about the tread budget. I'd actually been looking at the below as it's the earlier car with the non interference engine.

http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...

It was also SORN for a little while as well. Googled the registration and bit of history comes up. The main interest for me over the later cars is the engine and the classic car insurance. Not too fussed about the later model toys or power.

That is a LS400 Mk 3 (95-97 model). The pictures appear to be taken at the Thorrington level crossing. Could be from anywhere - at this level judge the car and don't worry too much about the rest.

A very nice looking Focus 1.6 Ghia 4 door for £375

Leather looks in good nick, bodywork looks untouched, it's rust-free, the aircon works and there're no oil leaks or warning lights. What's the catch?
