Hm. That's a shame.

My current car needs new brakes (discs and pads) all round. Close to £500. It cost under £1k to buy but the way I see it is that I might end up having to do that on another shed.
Aye, that is the gamble.

Of course, you could spend £500 on buying a new shed which'll run for a year without stopping. That's the whole point of shedding, the roll of the dice!

I'm in the market for a shed budget 306 GTi or 205 XS. Both rather cheap to insure!

Saw an M reg Rav4 2.0 petrol with a year's test for £650 on one of my local Facebook cars for sale pages - MOT history checks out too

Tempted as a winter runner but the seller is a pretty regular dodgy driveway trader type and I hate encouraging them

Can't really afford the risk at the mo, which is one of the reasons I'm seeing if I can make it decent.

Felicia 1.3 for £100 with a MOT - I'd have it to tear apart for parts for mine if it were closer! https://www.gumtree.com/p/skoda/skoda-felicia-1.3-...

Hi folks,

I'm on the lookout for a winter shed that will hopefully last through into the summer months too.

Vague requirements are:
- FWD, or cheap enough RWD to leave some funds for winter tyres.
- Able to carry snowboards and gear in the winter and bike(s) plus gear in the summer.
- Comfortable enough to do 8hr round trips once or twice a month, but still a reasonable drive going up into the mountains.

My MG ZT fits the bill, but it developed cooling issues so I've palmed it off onto my dad for retirement duties. Cars that I've considered include, but not limited too:
- Another ZT
- MG ZS 180
- Mondeo ST220
- Saab 9-5 Aero
- Saab 9-3 Aero
- Impreza Turbo Wagon

The Mondo and Impreza would be at the very bottom end of the market and would likely need some work at thread budget, but I'd be prepared to bust the wallet if something more decent came up.

Any other cars that I should consider? Any ideal candidates out there around the Scotland/North of England area?

Any advice appreciated smile

Might as well add a Volvo V70 to that list, then. (I'd go with an estate style because it'll be easier to loads stuff.)

Why not sort the cooling issues on the MG? If it's a V6 it may have a faulty thermostat housing, a known fault that affects this car and many other marques that use plastic thermostat housings, if its a 4 cylinder it may be the inlet manifold gasket perished, easy to replace and cheap, but fit a genuine one, also on the 4 cylinder it could be a leaking water pump, again an easy job but you do need to have the timing belt off. For both engines it could just be a simple as the radiator needs replacing or flushing or you do not have enough antifreeze as this is a coolant aid, again with both engines it could just be a faulty rad cap, cheap and available from Ebay or your local BMW dealer. I would try and fix the car you own first (unless it's a total heap).

Good call, I liked my old workhorse V40. Cheers smile

I did have a look at the common faults (it's a KV6) and couldn't see anything obvious. It was losing coolant at a fair old rate and overheated twice not long after a proper fill. A couple of bottles of Steel Seal seem to have helped. I owed my Dad a couple of cars from over the years anyway, so I decided to let him have the ZT as he barely does a hundred miles a month these days.

I've got a Merc 124 estate for sale in the Classifieds here. Already fitted with winter tryres, and comes with another set of alloys and decent tyres. Always room for a deal if you're interested?

I ought not link to my own ad, but it's an MB 124 280E in green, currently priced between 2 and 2,250. You should be able to find it with a search. It's on here, Autotrader and Car and Classic.

Ah, I was searching less than £2k as I was thinking it was closer to thread budget. I'm in the market for a Bargain Basement Barge Estate - don't seem to be that many around so the budget may have to increase.

Maybe something like this..... wink

My, what excellent taste you have!

Yes, I'm the seller. Don't want to stretch the rules too far, but I'm very happy to answer any questions and there's a deal to be done; with 2 other Mercs and a V70 T5, my drive's getting full!

So I've agreed to buy a 306 GTi 6 for the low, low price of £700.

High miles at over 200k but had an engine rebuild and head flow 100k miles ago and a cambelt 20k ago (although that was six years ago, so I will change it ASAP). Has been sitting in a garage for three years as the owner is abroad - his brother is selling it for him.

Has also had £500 put into it to get through its MOT in July. Full history and loads of paperwork for work done since the current owner bought it in 1999.

Looks to be a right bargain, exterior is ding free and the seats are even in good nick!

It's 350 miles away in Hampshire, so I'll have a good 6-7 hour drive to get acquainted with it. Can't wait. Photos to follow, assuming it gets me home in one piece.

It's working out cheaper to insure this thing than it would be for a bog standard 1.6 Focus, 1.4 Fiesta, 1.4 Fabia or 1.2 Polo. No contest.

Unfortunately, seems to have sold before I had a chance to post it up here - on my Autotrader saved search this morning, a 53 plate Skoda Octavia 1.8 T Elegance with 48k miles on the clock and plenty of MOT left with an asking price of £800.

Metallic red in the North East? If so, I saw and fancied that for myself. Looked absolutely lovely.

Nope, silver and down here in Dorset. It was an automatic, which wouldn't have bothered me (probably explains the low mileage). Checked the MOT history too, which backed up the mileage, and didn't contain any worrying advisories - if someone really did manage to get it for £800 or less, it was probably quite a bargain.
