Good luck.
If the autobox is only slightly juddery as in every now and then, eg when coming to a stop, then you're probably ok for a year.
I've got the Geartronic version and it's not smooth like my old CLK was. When I enter a roundabout, decelerating, if I then accelerate immediately after releasing the brake, it sometimes doesn't connect until a bit later than it should and you get a jolt. I've learnt to decelerate, wait until it "feels" like it's sorted itself out, then depress the accelerator. It's done this since January when I bought it and doesn't appear to have got any worse. Just won't be taking it on a track any time soon.
On a motorway, it's fine. Cruise to your destination with a minimum of fuss. In heavy traffic, just enjoy the music. I guess that's what the S60 is really about.
Edit: oh, I hear changing the clutch fluid may help. If it doesn't it seems like a waste of money. I dunno.

It's my first dabble in shedding (deliberate shedding anyway, I've had plenty out of necessity!)
I'll have to have a proper go in it to work out what sort of shape the gearbox is in... I haven't heard good things about them but if it seems okay, I might get the oil changed in an attempt to keep it working well.
That's what I'm after really, comfy motorway driving. Hope it proves to be a good purchase! Time will tell I suppose....

How much? Mine was £700 but I've since paid about that over the year to sort stuff out (including 4 new tyres so not so bad). It's my first dabble in shedding (deliberate shedding anyway, I've had plenty out of necessity!)

I wouldn't bother... I had a V70 T5 Geartronic about three years ago that used to bang into drive and at times completely forget what role it played and would need to be reminded by slamming it from D to R a couple of times. I debated a gearbox oil change but they take something ludicrous like 11,000 litres and can seemingly be a bad as they can good. So I ignored it and did nigh on 20k, sold it on and it was sold on again and it recently turned up via my work recently and it still drove through the gears. It was also £300 at the time so if it did go bang, I really couldn't lose. stevesuk said:
Something must be wrong with it at that price ... the MOT history site says on 28 May it passed with no advisories... Mileage then was 86,233 - so I guess the seller has rounded the figure down to the nearest 10,000.
£1000 for a private seller who doesn't want to mess about is about right, my high milage 04 model cost the same. Been faultless bar a maf sensor playing up.Amazing value for money, really nimble and pretty rapid in lift. Back seats fold nearly flat too so can be practical. Average around 30-35mpg, it only gets 7mpg in lift though
Only gripes are the brakes are too small and the MacPherson suspension on the front ruins the traction.

No leather, no air-con, looks honest though and no borkable auto either

Oh right, so if braking causes this, it's not actually a brakes issue? How much to fix?
It could be the brakes, or it could be the suspension. It can be a complete sod to track down on the E39.There are quite a lot of threads about it but this one is quite good.
http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/48298-steering-wheel...
In other news, the dirt cheap E39 broke down on me last night and is at the garage as we speak! I'm going to start a reader's cars thread on it so I'll update when I know more. Current best guesses are that one of the fuel senders is stuck so the gauge was lying or a fuel pump/relay/wiring issue.
That's what I call proper shedding - 36 hours and 140 miles into ownership and it conks out
Fuel pump is an easy DIY job (we've already ruled out the relay), also needs an inlet cam sensor but that's also easily DIYable and since it only means the car is a bit down on power/responsiveness it doesn't actually need doing as such.
It's gone a bit quiet in here gents, so with the new year a sniff away hopefully the used car market will pick up again.
Anyway, I need some inspiration. My current daily has reached that BB place where the repairs needed are disproportionate to the value of the car. It's a 2002 Saab 95 2.2tid - 200k on the clock. The handbrake is knackered, it needs two ball joints, there's a minor leak in the fuel line, and it's smoking enough to fail an MOT I reckon. All that on a car worth £400 at a push, I think it's time to move on.
So, the good news is I don't need a diesel anymore as my commute is now very short - 14 mile daily round trip.
It has to be an estate as I've got 4 kids and a dog....
I want something with a bit of welly, nothing outrageous, but not a 1.6 asthmatic shopping trolley.
The two on the shortlist are a Mk3 Mondeo 2.5 V6, and an MG ZT-T 190. I've made a Mondeo before albeit in diesel flavour and it was a nice car to be honest.
So other than these two, in budget, what other options am I overlooking?
Purchase to be made imminently as the MOT is beckoning on the Saab!

That looks lovely. Except I'm in Reading Why is it when you're seriously looking to buy the car that catch your eye are at the other end of the country??
If your genuine the guy buys and sells alot of cars on the local fb pages, if you message him he can be quite accomodating. Bought my bmw off him.csd19 said:
That's very nice - drop the sump and clean/replace the oil pick up, then give it an oil/filters service, job jobbed
Indeed. Whilst simultaneously praying the DIC and CPS aren't kaput or about to go. To be fair, there's hardly anything that goes wrong on these but when it's a £1k car it can be a tough choice when you get a couple of £300 bills.
Worth a punt ??!! Get a new seat from tbe breakers or some tasty seat covers from Halfords.....
