That's a great shed! Not only would you not mind it getting car park dings, I don't think anyone would park near it laugh

Would this be the D turbo engine that came in the pugs?

Eta this looks quite appealing http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/151968557833

Can't decide whether to spend £200 or not. Your thoughts welcome...

My Volvo's auto box doesn't always change gears smoothly. It sometimes feels "sticky". Yesterday, up a mile long hill it kept changing between gears even though I maintained 30mph.

I understand a simple drain-and-fill plus a filter change can help.

It's just passed its MOT, has new tyres and brakes. It's still driveable and probably won't get that much worse over the next 12 months. I use it 3-5 times a week, mainly town driving, motorways maybe once a fortnight.

Should I spend the £200?

How come it's £200? Does it use liquid unobtainium?

Surry tax ?

The question is what happens after you've spent the money, if it doesn't cure it ?

200 quid is par for the course / good value for an autobox fluid flush/change on a post 2001 car.... earlier ones might be a bit cheaper, but not much.

The majority of the cost comes from the fluid, you barely save anything doing it yourself as JWS3309 (which is what should be used post 2001) is pricey stuff.

If the rest of the car is trustworthy (and you want to keep it) id give it a go. Id also get the car on a proper Volvo VIDA examiner and reset/re-learn the g'box adaptations.... this makes a HUGE difference to how it drives.

The ONLY caveat with very old/gunked up boxes is that a fluid change can sometimes cause more (or even terminal) problems with the box, as the new fluid can loosen off otherwise stuck crud, and deposit them in the valve chest = ultra bork).

How old is the car?
2002. I read that I should drain and fill rather than flush (I say "I", I mean my local garage) to avoid the problems you've described.

I don't know what to do if it doesn't fix the problem.

This VIDA thing sounds like it'd cost more money still.

The car is still not perfect.

Rust. Gearbox. Cambelt.

Pretty much everything else is cheap to fix (ludicrously so, if you can do it yourself). Lots of bits available from breakers yards - although the number of Mk3s you can find is declining now, there was almost guaranteed to be one there a few years ago.
Seen some horror mk3s lately rust wise this is my first after a few mk2s and Corrados. Mk2s always felt really well made, these seem less so..

Anyway it seems the seller might think his no reserve auction ended too cheap as I now can't pin him down to pick it up. Pain in the ass as I've swapped my insurance now.
Finally picked it up.. Fresh mot on day of collection NO PAPERWORK haha. Oil pressure light came on in traffic and electric windows are cream crackered and nothing comes out the stereo. Actually pretty straight and clean, drove nice apart from pulling to the left a bit. For the money I'm loving it and think it looks half tidy. Only one area of rust on the o/s wing bottom.
Bits look cheap and available so will Chuck some thicker oil in and a new oil pressure switch and repair the windows and get a quarter moulding.
Lucky I'm near a VW breakers.

Find yourself a decent Volvo indy who knows what they are talking about and ask their honest advice.

Id be inclined to give it a go on a 2002, youll probably see some decent results.

Some say flush/fill, some say fluid exchange only - FWIW Ive always used the flush method on mine and its worked well, although with an older box perhaps replacement only is a better idea. You wont get it for much less than 200GBP, as the JWS 3309 fluid is pricey.

VIDA is just the Volvo examiner computer - a decent indy will have one. I can recommend strongly enough that you have the adaptations reset and re-learnt - it will transform the car, particularly after new fluid.

If you were inclined to take it to a dealer, its almost certain there will be one (or more) TCM updates available too, which will likely remove the neutral stop and update the shift pressure parameters.

With it being a shed, you have to weigh everything up I suppose. I have a decent history of Volvo autoboxes and I wouldnt get new fluid without doing the adaptations - its only 1/2 a job otherwise.
Oh right. Thanks for the tips. Do you know of any decent ones in Surrey or SW London?

I'm in the market for something cheap and follow this thread quite closely.
If anyone on here has anything they want to get rid of for for <£500 please PM me and i'll get back to you. The more interesting the better. Looks/dents/rust/electrics aren't an issue. I'm in Scotland but would happily travel for something particularly odd.

The £95 ZX diesel is a dreamboat but I don't have facebook. Gutted

Lucky I'm near a VW breakers.

The wires could be broken where they go into the door, that is a common fault and cheap to get those windows fixed.

£500

217,000 miles....might have a new engine, might not.

I'd take a punt if he put 12 months MOT on it.

Pretty tempted to add it to my growing collection of stupidly high mileage ste - don't think it'd be fair to expect a MOT on it though lol

I'll check that out! They did go down just not back up ha! Stop halfway and bounce back as if you put your arm in to stop it.. Bit of crunching up and down and got them both shut for the time being. Tempted to buy a Haynes and attempt to do the cambelt as the kit is £27 and the 8v meant to be a doddle. Takes the excitement out of it a bit though wink

Looks quite tidy. Guessing it's a later model from the wheels so rust likely to be less of an issue (1994 and before were made from poor quality steel). Electric windows are a known issue on Mk3s, as stated the wiring gets broken, though if yours works one way it's more likely to be the regulator. The cambelt is a fairly easy if boring task on the 8v, you may spend some time swearing at stubborn bolts though smile

Been offered a 95 bmw 730i for £200, no mot since last may, front wings rusty and blowing exhaust for mot he said but probably more, no paperwork, not sure of mileage, some sort of beige/cream interior.

What do we think?
