Look at that steering wheel laugh

I actually rather liked the one I had, somehow better to drive than the Bora with the same engine

Major haggling to be done on this given the intergalactic milage, but looks quite nice http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/188078/2000...

That looks pretty good, it must have been resprayed at some point. The mileage is irrelevant. Tack a torch, jack it up and check underneath, esp the rear subframe mounts.

Goog afternoon gentlemen and ladies if any come onto this thread!
Sometime during the summer I will have to replace my beloved Rover 200 with something elseit is not wearing it's 120k miles too well and I feel the mot will kill it off next month.
I am looking for something comfortable that is able to do high miles. I have looked on autotrader and the like and I have narrowed my search to Volvo V70s, S60s, MG ZTs and maybe a Saab or Peugeot 406.
Does anyone have experience of any of these?

Just a bit of background I am 24 and poor so reliability needs to be there, I also do a lot of trips to Liverpool from Devon so something comfortable would be great. My Rover sits at 3.5k rpm on the motorway!

That 530d I posted up there earlier, keep an eye out for dodgy egr system, swirl flaps (think e39 had them) and rear air suspension.

Apart from that, waft away at 45-50mpg!

I wish I had spotted this thread a couple of weeks ago when I was looking for a car. There are some seriously nice cars here for <1k...... some serious bork potential as well but nevertheless....... £460 for an MOTd 528 estate is a total bargain!

Well I have a thing for Volvo so the V70 or S60 would be my choice, although Saabs do seem to be better value. Having driven a couple of ZTs I wouldn't bother - very underwhelming really, no car should look faster than it is IMO. Plus overheating issues.

Agreed. How bothered are you by economy? As Saab 9-3s in 2.0t form go for peanuts compared to their peers. If I was on a budget that's probably where my money would go for a comfy mile muncher.
That said I recently went for a Volvo V70 2.4t (just over thread budget) and ETM issues aside, for my money I can't think of a better motorway cruiser, it's effortless.

Eta - look at this for a generic example... What more could you want for £900?

Those Saabs represent insane value in the UK. Still a 5k+ car here.
Same in Sweden in estate form! £895 for that is ridiculous value.

Good lump of motor-veer-hickle.

Rover 200 GTi. Hmmm how rare.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Looks in decent condition, under 50k and would surprise a few off the lights too.

Or..

Anyone overdosed on brave pills?
Laguna 2.0T with a few suspect add ons in blue with black/red leather silly

Or if you fancy something a little more sensible/presentable:
