I bought my mum a car as her Audi is nearing death. Still runs but not worth fixing.

A 2004 206 Gti 138bhp, 80k miles, 11.5 mot and last year a recon gearbox, clutch and timing belt. Runs well just a dent in front wing and tyres a bit mix and match. Will pick up a wing and hopefully set of tyres cheaply.

All for £465
Sounds like a cheap track car for someone starting out more than something for your mum. Cheap either way though.

Not sure not really that fast (had my old b5 1.8t A4 sport) and was local. if she doesn't like it will sell but I got it here instead of getting a loan so all good..

Anyone got any advice on what to look for on Nissan Almeras? A friend of mine is looking at buying one as a first car for her daughter and asked me to go and look at it with her. It's a 54-plate 1.5S with 70K on the clock. Looks fine from the photos and has 10 months ticket which it passed with only one advisory for a windscreen chip. Also claimed to have FSH. Guy wants £425.
These things eat timing chains. Check the cold idle isn't rough, then get it warm and floor it up to a decent speed. If it hesitates under load then I'd walk away.

There is some anecdotal evidence that O2 sensor failure is common. If the exhaust smells overly rich, could be an issue that replacing the sensor may only temporarily fix (until it fouls itself again).

Does anyone know about the CVT in Audi A4s around 2002, 2003?
I asked about comfortable cars under a grand a week or so ago and these have suddenly popped onto my radar.
My dad had this model A4 and I remember it being great. As far as I know the PD engine can do huge mileages returning good fuel consumption too.
Should I steer clear?

Yes, it was called the "Multichronic" for a reason.

Although in bargain basement if you find one that runs OK now, just bin it if it starts playing up.

I like they way they drive - but many don't.

My wife's lasted until 150k but the problem is that parts aren't available and a box from Audi is a ridiculous price.

They used to fix them using used parts from scrapped cars but as they get older there are very few (working) ones left.

When we looked to sell most dealers wouldn't consider taking a CVT in PX as they've had their fingers burnt in the past.

Yes, steer very clear, unless you can afford to throw it away when it plays up.

I kept mine going when it started refusing to start due to not recognising that it was in Park (likely metal fillings on the sensor) by adding a button that feed 12v direct to the starter solenoid; the day after it decided for a couple of minutes at Leigh Delamere that it wasn't going to recognise that it was in Drive I was sorting it out as a part-ex (for an Alfa which threw a conrod 3 months later, but you can't win them all wink ).

A classic Mini that looks in decent condition going by the pics, for £600: https://www.gumtree.com/p/mini/mini-cooper-classic...
"I was told it needs a service, whatever that means"

Something about it doesn't sit right with me. I think the seller is playing dumb, in a bid to try and hide something.

Almost certainly but then it's a £600 mini without MOT so you should be going expecting to find some issues.

I was thinking more along the lines of hiding its history. Previous owner not around any more, number plate covered up, needs to go by the weekend, scrap yard wouldn't take it...

It could of course be entirely innocent. I would imagine a car like that would make a couple of grand once running.
It's only 13 miles away. hmmm...

Check the V5 looks legit and then buy it... now.

Pretty sure it's a scam. Asked if it was still for sale, the reply was "Yrs". Asked him to send me the Rev so I can do a HPI check and the reply was "Its HPI clear, it's possibly sold as he's comin from London giving me a deposit collecting tomorrow".

He pretends not to know what a service is but he's savvy enough to do a HPI check himself...

If it is legit then it's worth ten times what he's asking for it with MOT.

I'd be at least paying it a visit if it was that close. For £600 shirley you can't loose money! (unless it's stolen then it's a different story)

Pretty much what I expected, I'm guessing he's hoping for someone who won't bother HPI checking it.

It took me 3 seconds to find the original advert at http://www.classiccarshq.co.uk/ads/for-sale-1992-c...

Well found. We now know 100% that the sellers story is fake. I wonder what the real story is!

Huh? It's a scam! The "seller" hopes that by advertising it so cheap someone will think it's the bargain of the century and bank transfer either the whole amount or at least a deposit to secure the car before going to look at it.

Yes, you're right. I was hanging on to the idea that the car did actually exist.

Thanks very much. Going to look at it Friday evening.
