Someone get this bought

I don't need it in the slightest but if it's around much longer I'll do something stupid

Probably the cheapest, most reliable motoring someone will ever have. Great little cars.

These are a PH favourite of sorts? Reasonable mileage and recent attention to bodywork. £850

1.6 ?

I thought they were only 1.4 or 1.7 - Google shows there was a 1.6 WTF ?

And one of the most uncomfortable cars someone will ever have - that person was me when I had an AX Forte 1.4 (insurance friendly AX Gti) years ago - amazing to drive but the pedals, seat and wheel are that offset you drive it twisted - ouch.

Yes, 1.6 replaced the 1.4 - so there were always only two choices of engine when new.

Not to mention the crash protection and crumple zone which basically consists of the passenger's legs.

hehe Thinking back, I would have never driven it the way I did if I'd realised the mess I could have made of myself if it had gone wrong. I worked at the bottom of the cat and fiddle before they ruined it with the average speed camera. smile

I had to get rid as I was getting serious back paid on my hour each way commute - though maybe having to cling onto the wheel at the phenomenal cornering speeds didn't help. biggrin

Sadly not the rev-tastic Yamaha 1.7vct, which is one of the defining points of the Puma in my opinion.

Also £850 is actually quite strong money for a Puma, so it would have to be extremely tidy to make up for having the wrong engine. The MOT history suggests it's also failed it's last MOT first time round for excessive corrosion on offside seatbelt anchorage, and both rear suspension mounts- so although this should have been sorted it certainly suggests the rust has very much taken hold on this one.

Back in Feb we picked up a 1-owner from new, 2002 year, 70k miles example in Red, 1.7, with absolute minimal corrosion, for £550. We did look at a LOT of very rusty (but even cheaper) examples before we found it mind!

Possibly the most smiles/cost car out there at the moment. But I would only consider the 1.7 vct as that engine is part of what makes the Puma so much fun.

'Just returned from gatwick airport and a 500 mile round trip. '
'122000 miles ( going up daily)'

Yet the MOT ran out on the 8th of March......

I've been offered a 02 plate Ka for £200. MOT until the end of the year. I'm going to have a look the weekend.

I know to check for rust around the filler cap and sills. Anyone here have experience of them, anything else to check? I believe the engine changed some point after 2001 from the old 1.3 to a better one?

I think it will be the previous pushrod engine. The OHC engine came in early 2003, mainly on 03 plates, some snuck through on 52 plates.

Rust everywhere, rust, rust and probably rust, the heater resistors fail but are an easy enough fix, its probably knackered but if it drives ok till the next mot they are a fun steer, they only do 35mpg also.

Agreed, they are a superb chassis. Steering and gearchange also great if in good nick.
Let down by rattly pushrod or wheezy OHC engines. Torquey enough though, not too slow.
Heaters can go as mentioned, steering racks can go, quite common I think on Ka/Fiesta. Clocksprings behind steering wheel (indicators wont self cancel), locks can seize up or collapse.
My mam had hers since 03; its still going but its a right bag of hammers now :s. Hasn't died yet though.
A fun car to bop around in.

Yeah, I hit on lucky with the Mondeo, right place right time kinda thing. Unless it goes kaboom, that is!
